i have been avoiding the 'glaucoma check' for a yr,,, what's it like ? just drops in the eye and dark glasses ? do tell~ i had a retinal blowout about a yr ago, i thought it was a retinal tear, from what i read online. but the doc i went to, not my regular doc, said no. he's the one who recommended i get the G test... why didn't he do it ? i didn't like him much....

Gus - I went to the medical center’s opthomologist for a while, but I felt the optometrist at Costco had better equipment and did a better job, believe it or not!

Of course they are independent of Costco, so I don’t know what they would be like where you are.

I can have a dialated eye exam or pay a modest additional fee for some sort of scan where they don’t have to give the blurry eye drops anymore. So, I said I’ll just pass on paying the fee, and the optometrist said no, they needed the imaging because of the diabetes risks. They gave it to me for free. They pull up comparisons of these elaborate pictures of the innards of the eyes showing the vessels too and look for damage and spots and such. They pull up several pictures over time looking for changes, so it is good to find a place to keep going to over time because some very subtle “things” on the image mean nothing if they never change but need referral if they ever do.

My last optometrist never told me what she was looking at, just that all was fine. The current one tells me what exactly he is looking at and why. When she left, I asked reception to give me someone people my age like, someone good with progressives. That’s how I got him

The worst part is holding the eye open for the puff of air. It isn’t terrible.
Thanks for this!

I went to see a family optometrist. It gets bulk billed to the government so they pay for it. I get my eyes checked because of family history, diabetes and psych meds can be notorious for affecting eyesight too.

They just put a drop in your eye and then take a picture of the back of the eye. She held my each eye lid apart for a second or two because I have a rapid blinking response. It is quick and very cool to see the pictures of the back of the eye and have them compared to the last time. Last time I had an issue with a very small vein in my eye and this time it had mended itself. She let me see the pictures from this year and last year and explains everything. I have very good eyes "for my age"

Don't have Costco near me - seems like a one stop shop for everything. Gus why did a doc tell you you had a blowout? You shouldn't have to google something that sounds as serious as that.
Thanks for this!

thanks for the feedback on eyesight~! i am a 'self-diagnoser'; i don't trust docs, so i only believe them if they agree with me ~ hahahahah
i went to the doc because i had flashes of light and black spots in my right eye, and when i googled it, i got "retinal tear". well, even i know that's serious, sometimes requiring surgery to tack it back down.

the symptoms are from fluids leaking from the inner eye under the retinae. it can lead to blindness. so i went; i am quite familiar with the regular eye exam, puff and all... this doc said my pressure was 'high', and i needed a glaucoma exam... but he didn't tell me how to get one~! there are only 2 eye docs in this town, and no ophthalmologists at all, for 70 miles, and i don't drive anymore. so, a yr later, i still don't have the G test, whatever that might be. no eye doc has ever shown me pics of my eyes... they just say: are you cheating ??? when they test my peripheral vision~! hahahah,, now with the new machines they can see clearly that i'm not~!

Maybe you could ask your good general doctor where you could get this done and make an outing of it with a friend who can drive or go on a bus trip to Costco? I asked the optometrist when I would actually feel that the pressure had changed. She said I would feel pain when the eye pressure was about 35 but also said it would be too late to do anything about it at that stage. They like people to be under 25 for eye pressure. I was 10 in one eye and 12 in the other.

Don’t see anything wrong with fruit salad Gus. Whole fruits aren’t that bad. 😀

Lose the whipped cream Gus and use natural yoghurt that is low in sugar or even a diabetic ice cream. Try grated apples and a small sprinkling of pecans or walnuts. I am sure that there are some fruits that are lower in sugar than others. Stewed fruits in artificial sweetener may also be an option like rhubarb and apples. You can have your fruit and eat it too.

for a couple of years i was eating a small apple a day. i used it for snack times, 50 calories,, a great deal. but ,, as time goes by,,, i just got tired of apples...
oranges are much higher in sugar, and bananas are 100 cals per~! peaches, esp. the local ones (colorado) are so good, but they are only available for a few weeks each fall.

our market carries crap for fruit and vegetables, like we are goats, or something. i try this and that, thinking the changes will help, and they do.... but it's hard to eat well when one does not have good transportation to the crappy market. i save my canned peaches and juices for those occasional mornings when i wake up with BSL's in the 50's and 60's,,
somehow i always wake up in time,, my body can feel me fading and is not willing to go there~

Didn’t mean to make you gag Gus. What about diet jelly and low fat ice cream? Living where you do makes getting fruit etc very hard. I love peaches even when they come in a tin but eAting the same fruit over and over is no fun. Today I went to the fruit shop and saw these lovely oranges but know I can't eat them because they give me migraines.
Can you ask any neighbours what they do for a better source of fruit? Does anywhere make deliveries to you?
Thanks for this!

Hi all,
We are back on schedule here at home. Husband is back at work today and hopefully he will just need scans and blood work for the next five years. But really it's no more than one day at a time.

Got all my exercises done today. Lost a little bit but still did, well. Won't take me long to work my way back up to the usual reps

I am pleased that things are back on track Deejay. Wish you could bottle that motivation to get exercise done and send some over here.
It’s cold here and I haven't been for a proper walk for ages. Too much time in bed and too much peanut butter.
Thanks for this!

Starting this weekend it's going to be in the mid 90's and very humid for the entire week. Not looking forward to it!

Yesterday I finally broke the dry spell of walking and went and did it. Even in the afternoon the fog was so thick that I was unable to see the end of each block. Max of 40f. A bit eerie but yay me. Will see if I can do it two days in a row.

Excellent job Possum! Just take one day at a time with exercise. If I have it in my head I have to exercise 5 days in a row I don't think I would do half as well.
I just make a plan for one day, each day.

Today I sweat through my exercise. Incredibly hot and humid here. I hate to sweat!!!
