What is the term when you switch but are prest to have a common memory? This is when we feel safe and know that we are near someone that will keep us safe if we do switch or in a public place so that we can leave if we do not feel safe.
~ The second term we are looking for is when we sitch in fear and have a black out due to fear and have no memoir of what has happened but can tell that time has passed. Wht do you call this and how do find safety when the ones that cause it are suppose to be the specialtice that are to help you? WE feel alright when we have some one with us but it has gotten to the point that because those T that hurt us in the past we do not feel safe with the T we Have now. Dou to the issues around this it really will change even if we got another T so we are trying to work this fear out with the one we have but do not have the words that will help us get this person to understand it. ~ CAn you help us find the words? This is the point of debate that is keeping us from getting a SErvice dog up to this point. She says that she can get us permission for a dog that can stay home but we need something that will allow us to spend more time out of the apartment and allow us to feel surcure enough to be around people and make friends. We can not do that if we are homebound and not able to relaxe around people. ~ Thank you all for your help.

Around here there is no special words other than the word switching for the act of changing into an alter. though each of our clients have their own terms for discribing what is happening to them based on how they feel while they switch. example one client calls it sinking, another calls it melting, another client calls it floating. being aware and sharing the same memories as the alter is called being co conscious. reactions like doing something because of a trigger is called having an anxiety attack example when I become anxious, nervous, fearful of something I have panic symptoms and if not taken care of I have dissociation symptoms. the terms associated with having black outs depends on the underlying symptoms and reasons example an alcoholic will have black outs if they drink. a drug addict will have black outs if they use drugs, a person prone to anxiety attacks will have black outs because they are hyperventilating or not breathing enough, Here the term black outs is not used in relation to having dissociative disorders. here the mental health community believes a dissociative person loses time but they dont black out they "switch" into alters. if a person cant remember what happened during the time they are an alter they are experiencing dissociative amnesia which is different than drinking or doing drugs so much your body cant focus and remember things. My suggestion is talk with your treatment people. they can tell you what the correct terms are for your situation and location and can help you through the process of getting the right pet you need so that you can feel safe. ![]() |

We will be interested in reading others answers to this question! We have terms for some of these things, but they are terms we made for ourselves, and may not be the "correct" or official terms. If you need to correct terms to fill out paperwork for a service dog, we agree you should ask your T to help with the forms. That is so cool you might be able to get a dog! That would be great. We have pets, and they are a great comfort to us. They make us laugh, they get us out of bed when we'd rather stay under the covers. We hope you can get the dog.
We use the term "rolling" rather than "switching" if we're changing who's at surface while co-conscious. We say "switch" if someone comes out causing lost time for others. We also have a non-human alter and if she is out, we say "change" because it's like we really become something else entirely. Good luck! Let us know what happens! |

Thank you both, we did talk to T aboout it and like we thought it is open to the person calling the shots. she is making an appointment for us with the med - nurse to get the ball rolling and it seems that having the right person with us is what did it. so we are going for the service dog with PTSD. We finail got that one agread too. so now it is only a matter of time for soc. security. She said that she was even going to look into that. WOW to things in one day. Now the wait and see for it to come through.

Hi
![]() "Dissociation" is a term used to describe the loss of time, and inability to recall what took place during that time. Some do sense things going "black" as another alter takes over and the present one is not co-conscious. (Yes, some alters can be co-conscious with others and some not be. There is also one-way awareness, where one alter is aware of another, but that other one is not aware of them. "Trigger" is what you call it when something occurs or a memory causes fear. You can have triggers that you don't realize, but are "body memories" only. I'm glad you are able to have your PTSD dog in the future. Not everyone with DID also has PTSD, so don't feel you have to explain anything to anyone, ok? Stay safe.

We just call it switching. Our counselor calls hiding or running away when I switch because of fear and I can't remember what happens. I do have a name for the place that I go when that happens, the "hole". I call it that because it seems like that's where I am. I can't see anything or hear anything or remember anything. The others inside have started calling it that too and when our counselor asks where I am, they tell him that I'm in the hole, which generally means that something big has happened that I was unable to deal with before. I am sorry that I got off on a tangent, but your questions sparked that in my mind. Cris from the Hotel |

Thank you all. It just seems like my T wanted to see if I known the difference. You all made us feel good because you all said the same as I did. We are co-consiouse but when in fear we disasociate into a black out stage. Our T was going on the premise that if we still have disasocating spells then we could not be co-consiouse. either way you made us feel better because we felt heard hear thank you.
