I have an alter that comes in and out over periods of time. Sometimes we share the memories from the other but sometimes it is like missing time. But there are times when we seem merged into one person, just 'me' instead of 'us' and there is no disinguishing between the two but over time we separate again. Does anybody else have this sort of splitting/merging sensation? My therapist says it is normal for some people for alters to join together but that they are not actually merging but just co-existing at the same time sharing memories and feelings etc.

Just wondering if anybody else gets this with theirs.

here where I live and work what you described is called being co conscious, co consciousness.. everyone has their own internal system based on what they needed to survive.. as a result some needed to be more aware of some of their alters then others. Sometimes co consciousness is like hearing the voices other times its knowing/watching what is going on from a distance, other times its like being like one where both alter and the host are so conscious of each other that its like being one together, but then sometimes the host or the alter encounter something that cant be shared so one or the other closes their self off from the other.

On rare occasions this happened to me but with most of my system we had very little co consciousness (some places use the term awareness) of each other.
Thanks for this!

My t says the same thing as amandalouise about co consciousness. T gave me the visual using her hands...she put one forward and one back, representing one part being out and the other being in. Then she put them both forward, and called this co consciousness. For me, it kind of feels like my mind automatically puts out whoever is needed to get through each moment (when I am in public, I can feel them with me and I can feel a struggle to keep everyone in "check" to keep up the appearance of having it all together. When I am in private...they come out, and I feel I have very little to no control). I hear them fighting and having polar opposite opinions all day long though (sometimes this does come out in my speech as well), and trying to steer me all over the place. Sometimes there are shared memories, sometimes not, sometimes I am emotionless, sometimes over emotional.

For instance, right now I have a part that is asking me why the hell I'm writing this, it's private (there is more to that, but this part likes to cuss a lot haha). They are also saying that I'm not making any sense or I am misrepresenting them...I'm telling them that if anyone else can gain anything from our experience, then that is a good thing. By doing this, I am also trying to understand them better, maybe we will get more answers and a better understanding as well.

My t also calls it co-conscience. I relate it like a bar with a bar stool. whoever is sitting on the stool is out but the others, including myself, can hear and see what is going on.

Hmmm,
Well, for us, we can communicate inside.
If an alter takes over, they take over and I am inside and lose time.
If I am co-conscious with an alter, I do NOT have control, only the vision, sounds and knowledge of what is happening.
I am not driving the car, I am only a passenger.
However, there are other times that an alter is just about out and we are more than that, I am in control and can communicate with that alter.

Maybe I should re-orient my thinking to
If alter is in control and I can only hear, see, and know what is happening I should call that "awareness"
If I am in control and can communicate and work with the desires of the alter I should call that "co-consciousness".

Hmmmmm.
