Hi all,

I often find that in periods of stress, I shut down and don't talk. I also loose track of time, forget where I am or where I've been or where I'm going and have trouble remembering important information when the time comes to recall it at work.

I find it hard to express myself and talk to people if I'm in this state. I mean, it's like I'm not even me. I'm not the most active or happy person going, but when I'm like this it's like I just switch off for a time. For example, I was at a party at the weekend and I apparently quietly got up off the sofa and went in the kitchen, sitting in a corner staring in to space.

The hell?

These periods are becoming more frequent. I've found myself in the toilet at work just sitting staring into space after a stressful phone call.

What you describe can be caused by stress alone. If you have a therapist share your experience with him/her. If you don't have a therapist it might be a good idea to find one. Everyone needs someone to talk to and sometimes we can't talk to our family or friends about what is going on in our head. A therapist is a good place to start.

your subject line...are you dissociating....Im sorry but we can not tell you whether you are dissociating or not. only you and your treatment providers can diagnose whether you are dissociating or not..

in .....me....my treatment providers called this many things.....psychotic reaction, stress, anxiety, dissociation, derealization, depersonalization, mania, bipolar disorder, sleep deprivation, medication problems and many others too.

if you google this problem you will find that this can be anything from normal to any mental disorder and any physical health problem..

my suggestion if this continues to bother you contact your treatment provider. they can tell you what this is with in you.

I hesitate to just say, "Yes, you're dissociating," because I'm concerned that you and I might mean very different things with the same term.

I hear you saying you're zoning out, feeling like you're not "you" or not "real," and that you're experiencing memory issues. Well, yeah, that *could* be described with the term "dissociation," but not as a diagnosis or psychological condition. Lots of people have these experiences. Dissociation exists on a continuum and is basically synonymous with "zoning out." It's a question of a) degree and b) disruptiveness for you.
