I'm not 100% sure what dissociating is. This is the best analogy I have come up with that people seem to understand in general. When you read a book and you start at the top of the page, and then all of the sudden you're at the bottom but you don't really remember reading it, but obviously you must have because you have gotten to the bottom. Is that dissociating? I get that feeling a lot recently and I don't even know how long it really lasts. With a book obviously it's one page, and that's that, but this happens when I'm doing anything. I just sort of all of the sudden "come to" not really remembering what has happened, but it seems like I have "gone through the motions" of whatever task I was doing because it was actually completed, though I don't remember doing it. Would that be it? I'm not sure.. I don't think I have DID or anything, but this happening to me all of the time is starting to be worrying. I'd hate to have it happen while doing something like driving, etc., and get into an accident and not even really remember it.

Hi asylumgardens. Your analogy is great. Dissociating? Everyone dissociates to a degree and the dissociation scale is like a line with a million little dots on it. Someone can be any where on that line. When it starts to interfere with your daily living, it's a good idea to talk to someone who can help.

Please continue to post here and get support as you can. There are many here that can relate to what you are saying. It's completely understandable to be concerned about it, especially if it's happening at times that can cause you to be unsafe. Do you have a T that you can discuss this with as well?

Wishing you the best as you work through things.

Thanks wantto. I'm not at the point where I think it's a huge issue in my life yet, but I'm worried it'll keep escalating. I've had the normal bouts of it that everyone does (like when reading, it also happened a lot when I was playing music in band lol) but now it's just way way more often. I'll let my therapist know about it so maybe she can ofter some insight or monitor it or something.

I think that's a pretty good analogy... no, not everyone who dissociates has DID, lol. and there are even different degrees of DID. Everyone dissociates to some extent, especially with highway hypnosis, etc. A dissociative disorder is one that starts messing with your life. I'm glad you're talking to your T! They have the best knowledge to tell you how to help yourself.
