Does your therapist "recognize" your different alters by their mannerisms.... does he call each by their name?? Does he ever ask for a certain one so he can talk to that alter???

I can't say with my new T...only seen her twice...but my old one told me she could tell and would acknowledge their needs...i.e. if a little one wanted to color/draw etc then fine. But to my knowledge she never asked to speak to one in particular, she'd just go with the flow and whoever came out came out.

I've had 3 t's now in regards to this topic. #1 would ask about them and how they're doing and she got them a lot - and some would get mad at her. But she didn't think i was DID - this was all just "inner child stuff", forget that i had 3 kids in there. So she would make me switch by asking about them.

#2 could tell when i switched and would demand to know who she was talking to (which was never a good thing; either the alter didn't know, or didn't want to say). I have read that to be true for others as well -that asking for the name is not usually a happy thing.

#3 really hasn't seen any yet. I mean, i know i have switched, but I don't think she can tell. THey are pretty subtle and #2 knew that and could tell by my voice or lack of eye contact. But #3 hasn't seen any of the kids yet. I just sent her an email that was very dramatic in switching and the text fonts differ to make it more clear. I've not had a response on this... Monday will be interesting, me thinks. SH'es pretty new to this as DID but tells me she's worked with many people in "altered states" - i have no idea what that menas!?!

I don't know if that answers your question, free.

I don't have DID so I don't switch, I just have ego states. When we did work with one of the little girls last year, T used the "Talk Through" method, where he talks through me to the ego state. He would pose his questions to me, I would ask the little girl ego state, and then relay her answers to him. This worked well.

Sometimes it seems like people are labeled with BPD when symptoms are complicated or not easily cured by a pill.

My T recognizes my alters very well. Several she knows by mannerisms and doesn't even have to ask them for verification. She calls all of us by individual names and treats us wonderfully. How does your T... deal with your alters?????

My T dealt will all my alters by validating & acknowledging each and everyone of them...... and by giving them their time in T (if & when) they decided to be present.

My T never called any of my alters directly. Sometimes she would ask if anyone had any input/questions/comments/want-to-cuss-her-out. And when any did show up on their own she treated them with respect and gave them the time they needed and worked wonderfully with all of us. It did take her a while to figure out when I would switch because they also were very subtle and didn't always want to say who it was.

Also, prosecarousel, I'm not sure how much its talked about around here (I'm kind-of new around here... haven't posted much), but there are still many Pdocs, Ts, etc that do not believe in DID. I was made aware of this recently. So maybe the doctor that gave you the look because of his ignorance.
