im pretty new here but i had a question i was hoping to get some views on. i was wondering if people think therapy really is useful in getting over bulimia? im trying to find a therapist because im really getting scared. i cant get a handle on this bingeing and purging and i just dont know if anyone else can help. even a therapist. it seems so out of control. i binge and throw up at least once most days, sometimes up to three times and ive tasted blood a few times afterwards and am having a lot of stomach pains, nausea and cramps that come and go but i just cant stop eating. the more scared i get the more i need to eat and then i end up throwing up again. i think about trying to distract myself and i have tried different things but then i get more and more anxious and scared because im not allowed to eat so the urge to eat gets even more powerful and i just cant imagine how that could ever stop. it seems so impossible that someone else can help me fix this. so i guess im wondering has therapy helped others in this position?

Therapy can help. It's important for it to be a good match between the client and the therapist. And from what you describe, I definitely would recommend a therapist who has experience with eating disorders. Your family physician should also be included in your treatment, as it sounds like you might be having medical complications from bulimia.
I don't have direct experience of this problem, but I have worked with some women with it. It's a hard thing to deal with. I'm glad you're asking about help. Good luck! gg

I personally feel that it can be, for you are probably having this problem due to an emotional wound that lies deep within you, from your past (and) if you can heal that wound completely or slightly then you can work on stopping the eating disorder. Hi Gardenergirl and Rhapsody,
Thanks for the input. I have actually been to therapy before and it was sometimes ok for other stuff but when i mentioned the ed she more or less ignored it. i feel so out of my depth with so much stuff right now though. i need so badly to get some control back over this thing and to have someone who can tell me if im being nuts about things cos i just worry theres something seriously wrong with my head sometimes. sigh. thanks again for replying. biiv |

i guess im just afraid she ll tell me to go to a dr. (which is a terrifying thought) and/or tell me to take meds cos i was on anti-anxiety/depression meds for about two years and just got off them (with difficulty) a few months ago. i really dont want to go back on them again.
thanks for recommending the books and just for talking to me. biiv |
