We are here because our parents had an impulse. For some, it was love, for others, it was pure sex drive. What we should do, now that we're here, is another question.

I interpreted your question as to why are we here on Psych Central?
Psych Central provides me with a safe place to make friends with people who also struggle with mental illness. Consequently, I have a family who understands me, and that let's me live, laugh, and love. I'm also here because I'm not all there. |

Thank you both of you for responding. I thought this question was interesting because the answer will depend on many factors such as what context you'd find this questions in, you might imagine this questions asked with some emotional tone and some might post that here.
I was also wondering, what sort of person would define each words, 'why' 'we' and 'here', and how. Would take the meaning the same all the time? I say I might. This is my take on this. If this question is asked by a small kid, even teenagers or 20-something youngsters, and if I find them immature or under developmental stage of learning in life, I wouldn't have answer for them, basically, I don't want to ruin a young mind. They can go somewhere else, like teachers/parents for an appropriate answer, although they will not stick as an absolute answer to that question in their life, therefore, this whole exercise seems pointless, I'd probably be dishonest, I'd try to find what they would want, which would be another difficult task for sure. Older generations. Those with one foot in the grave, if they pose this question to me, I'd think, "Why wouldn't you have figure it out by now?". Of course I wouldn't say what I'd think about the person in thier faces, this goes the same as little kids, they should go out the door happy, nothing I say would help them, I'd be reading that person and I hope I'd just listen what they have to say. Do they realize that the question changes it's shape metaphilically speaking like I think it does, why now? what past would make his explanation/experiences of that question? So, it's more likely that I'd offer my opinion at the end of the conversation. Say, the rest of the group, us, vast majority of active minds, things were already taught, some, highly intellectual and successful, some fallen off the cliff, never to be seen again. Artists, linguists, lawyers, students, whatever, I just consider myself layman. What about rain man? Anyhow, I'd likely be delighted to hear that question, because this makes me think a lot. If this question were to be asked in a real conversation, what would be the literal meaning here? Would it be taboo to be said in a relationship for example? I guess I just let this simmer for a bit, or else I'm gonna run out of the things to say later on. ![]() Quote:

I absolutely love the way you are intellectualizing this. I also love your update: Takeshi is probably emotional. I have no idea where this is coming from.
I answered in the way that I did because, to me, sex drive and love explain why we came to be here. I didn't answer what we should do now that we are here because, to me, that's a separate question and I didn't want to contaminate the spirit of your thought with unsolicited answers, but, I see better now the exact way you intended it and I value your own reply very much. I'm very interested in others opinions too and for now, the answer to why we are here uses more time than I have available to answer in completeness, so my short answer is, referring back to the 'what we should do' rather than the why of being here, is, we need to learn to get along, peacefully, without causing damage to others, since we are here anyway and the 'why' of the question seems pointless to me, but I understand why people wonder, as I did when I was younger. |

I believe asking why could be taken as being offensive especially among adults. Just saying.

Actually, I've seen similar big life question thread here before. I just wanna know how y'all navigate this life. I'm asking this question to mental health related minds here on PC. I don't have much socialization in "real" life due primarily to the following: 1) I was injured in the military in 2002 which resulted in severe nerve damage. I cannot drive a car, so getting out and about is difficult. 2) I had a stroke in October 2014--I almost died. I was at a low point in my life, and that greatly contributed to my joining Psych Central (I joined the next month). It would be fair to say that my faith and the kind people of Psych Central played a major role in the improvement of my health. So my answer is socialization. |

Takeshi. I am here for I think the same reason as I attend a support group. I have an opportunity, to feel some normalcy within a broader family.
I post because I need to not only participate but voice my opinion. If I can help someone to reflect on or improve upon their own issues then I feel I have accomplished something. It is for the same reason I take turns moderating my support group. It allows me to not only participate but have a greater imput and impact upon my group. It is about being 'present' and being part of something. |

![]() Does asking why annoy you, separate you from the person you're asking to, or does it unite us? Y'know, us at large. What would happen if someone were to go find a stranger and ask "Why are we(the two strangers) here?" The person can take a step back and one could ask instead, "Now that we are here, what we should do?" Sounds like almost the same thing that they would be doing. Quote:
I can't go on. I'd love to read more posts/reply to this thread too. So, I'll pause and leave with one random additional thought. I think about "Why are we here?". then I almost always think "How can I surge up within myself? (Everybody else seems to be doing fine with this... ![]() |

I'm an emotional mess, I probably shouldn't be here, but here I go anyways. I remember some of what you posted there. Let me just give it narrower definition to the word 'socialization' for the sake of an argument. Socialization here on PC. I'm with you on that, I'm here to help me grow through the socialization. Many members such as yourself share then I receive, when I get to read them.
Most of the time, I guess I know how to keep an emotional distance, I do okay between fiction and non-fiction. Most of stuff here are from real life. For me, it gets realer when I open my heart, things just sneaks in and hit me hard, and I crumble. This doesn't get me where I wanna go, for this particular moment, I feel that I just go back and back, to where I have to teach myself how to learn things. To learn as I go? Nothing I read here really scars me or anything, they seem to affect me a little harder on me than others though. Is this(what I feel) completely wrong? They are not my experience, yet, on human level, which I see within myself as part of it, I relate. Sometimes not, of course. I think that I just need to ask my self again, what other ways are there for me to deal with this.. I don't get I. ![]() |

To be present and one participate. Be part of something. I'm trying here to see if I can learn something from you. I know what that's trying to say, it's not sinking in though. I just seem to struggle about what defines me. This is, I guess, separated from anxiety and negativity, this is also not me withdrawing.
Can I own me, being myself? Okay, here's an extreme example. One day, we're gonna have a first Android/AI, just imagine the advanced version of Cylon. (Please don't go too technical on this one.) Does it get unrecognizably human like, if it started to walk amongst us human? I just sometimes see myself completely separated from the population. I know I can't live alone. ![]() Edit: The cylon, if it were preloaded with all the knowledge, would we be okay? I think that's a scary thought. Is this how I see humanity? I hate to get all serious here, it seems like I'm the one always crashing everyones fun by being too serious. I do love everyones humor
![]() ' "How can I surge up within myself? ' Gosh, do I understand that one. I spent years spinning downward, ever trying to get up and everyday, I started at the bottom again. I could never understand how to reach a bit of elevation, make it grow, even a little, each day. How did others do it? It was something I guess that just had to run its' course, and, what a long course it had. Someone once said to me, it seemed so profound at the time, that it stuck with me for a long time and I repeated it to myself again and again. It's really simple, like so many truly profound things are. They said, whatever your first thought of the day is, that's how the rest of your day will go. Try it. Try to make your first thought positive, even if it doesn't feel true or seem to fit. It will affect how the rest of your day goes. |

Ask a quick question and get a quick answer... not going to happen with this question as it is the one question the human race ask themselves and others. I find myself asking that question usually in the depths of depression. When I was a young adult I did infact ask my doctor that question and his reply was very blunt, 'To procreate, make babies and die.' I was so dissapointed with that. Must be more to it than that surely and I guess it is the basis of the start up of many religions too. Going off tangent a little but I eventually decided sometime ago the reason why we are here is to help each other. Or it could just be to pay the bills and then die?

My thinking is that we are strictly here as a result of natural laws at work in a given environment. There is no other reason than that. The world, the universe is ours to explore and our destiny is ours to create strictly due to sheer dumb luck.

Back from the dead.
![]() I don't answer to why, only a few possibilities are there for us to consider, we agree or may disagree, but I have been following the general consensus here that we are here (at PC) that we're here to help each other. I guess sometimes we don't got the time to ask why, gotta act on it asap, I just wanna prepare myself for that moment, to that end, I try to work and live. Let me just say that is my goal. Thanks everyone for the information. nah, thanks for your warm and kind heart. |
