My mother is manic depressive.. She has been in the paych ward for 10 days now and she is very good and manipulating and deceiving her doctors to making them think she's okay. She has been off her medication for 5 months... I was just here to get feed back on how long do you guys possibly think it will take to get her back to baseline????

Hello Hdb19855: You know... unfortunately... everyone's experience is so different. I personally doubt it is possible to say how long it may take to get your mother back to baseline. There are so many variables to be considered, including how complex her current mental health situation is currently, what medications she's put on, & whether or not she is med compliant once she leaves the hospital. Also, different individuals react differently to different med's. Sometimes it can take a while to find the right one, or the right "cocktail" as med's are sometimes referred to when more than one is involved. I hazard to even offer a suggestion with regard to this. But, I'll speculate... maybe 2 or 3 months... maybe? However, it is also true that, sometimes, a person can begin to feel better pretty-much right away. It's just so difficult to predict. Perhaps other members, here on PC, will have other perspectives. Good luck...

10 days is a long time. Usually the hospital makes sure they're safe and kick them out to a psychiatrist to work on getting them to base line. At least in my area. Her "base line" may never be the same.

She is on seroquel 800mg plus ambien 12.5mg every night and when she takes these meds she is just fine.. But she's been off of them for so long I'm worried because she is still having very bad delusions and only sleeping 5-6 hours a night which I know to bring her back to baseline she needs at least 8-10 hours every night... She is very bad off and blaming me for her being in the psych ward but I have to remember it's the disease talking and not her... But the only thing is she told me 2 days she's not going to get any better this is it for and the doctor spoke with her Friday and she thought she was going to get release and she didn't... I just want my mom back and she thinks I put her in the psych ward to hurt her... I'm doing it to save her life but she doesn't see it that way.

Try and speak to her doctors and advise them of your concerns. Ask them how they think she is doing. Most doctors are well aware of how patients may manipulate them into early release. .

Well after the conference Friday and she didn't get released she thinks I told the doctor she is not baseline yet so she wrote a statement since the nurse told me she's. "Competent" telling them not to share any information about her with me now... So now they won't tell me anything !!!!!!

i think she doesn't want to be on the meds? it could take a long time before she is baseline as i know from my own experience. i am a lifer on my meds, can't live without them. i don't know if this is a bad reply but it does seem like according to you she is blaming you. thats exactly what i did to my parents, but now that i am stable i don't see it that way anymore and am thankful they did.

That's what I believe as well. She doesn't want to get better and likes the feeling of being manic and the euphoria high.. That's why she's so angry with me and blaming me for her being in the psych ward

This wouldn't be the first time a patient would try to present themselves as normal. I would suggest then that most professionals are accustomed to this well enough to recognize it.

I'm not so sure though that the mental healthcare team would go into detail other than letting you know how 'fine' she is unless your mother has put you down to receive such information (I myself had to provide a list of person(s) I permitted to talk to the team about my health). However, that being said, they will likely take into account the support network they see forming around your mother and make considerations on discharge as a result.

Still, I think they would also take into account your worries if you were to communicate to them - especially any input you had into your mother's mental history.
Thanks for this!
