Hello I have been taking Olanapine for about 2-3 years now. When I first started olanzapine I noticed after about 2 weeks I started to gain weight, i told my mental health nurse and he said thats the olanzapine mate. Before I started taking it I weight around 80-84kgs and after about a year i went up to 100kgs and now its stabilised. Problem is I dont really want to get off the olanzapine because I feel stable now and its like the miracle medication for me, but i do want to lose weight.

How should I go about doing this? I do karate once a week and sometimes go for walks if that helps. Also I do drink beer and coke every day.
Hugs from:

Thanks for this!

Weight is subjective. Work on fixing the mind right now. The body can wait.

Well, you said you're already doing sports and walking, and that's good Try to tone down the beer maybe? One a day seems too much.. also, what do you usually eat?

BTW, don't get obsessed over this thing - it's ok to want to lose weight, but remember to take care of other aspects of your life too

Quit the coke and beer, and see what happens.

I eat better. Everything is fresh and made from scratch. Absolutely nothing processed, pre-made, or out of a box; strictly fresh food. No pop, no juice, no alcohol. Gaining it is quick, losing it is not so quick. But it's happening for me.

Have you tried Metformin (Glucophage)? It's a diabetes drug but it helps with weight loss in some people on APs. I'm on it and while I haven't been able to take a very large dose because my blood sugar was too low when tested I've gradually lost about 10 lbs. in the last 2.5 months. Which at least gets me back to about where I was when I started clozaril in February. It takes away the nighttime starvation hours for me. I want to try a higher dose but would have to do blood sugar tests and could have problems with low blood sugar and so as long as the low dose is helping I'm hesitant to try.

Struggling with the same thing. I've never worked so hard to lose wait. I've gained 15 pounds since I started taking it this spring. In the last 28 days, I've lost 4 pounds with Loseit at 1800 calories and a pedometer at between 10-15k steps a day plus swimming 3 times a week. The diet is also specific. Carbs with one meal. High lean protein between meals. Lots of fruits and veggies.

It's just hard, but what it comes down to is that this medicine has helped me significantly. And no matter my weight, I'm am improving my health all around. Weight is not the only measurement to consider.

I think that cutting down on White, starchy carbs and sugar is the way to go. Getting your carbs from eating more vegetables is better. Eat proper unprocessed, unrefjned food. Quit the coke and don't drink beer too often. Exercise alone doesn't burn off enough calories to lose much weight. Check out the LCHF vids on youtube. Obviously you need need to talk to your doctor about your diet but a lot of them are still stuck in the past as regards what constitutes a healthy diet.

It is mostly processing carbs that gets messed up by this med. It means that the body deals with proteins and fats more normally. I know I personally couldn't do it, but basing meals around meat/fish plus salad type veggies, cutting out starches (and of course processed sugars!!!) sounds like it could work. Like I said I could not eat atkinsish for a long time, but some people actually like it.

Then there is the melt in your mouth wafer type of the med that is said to cause less weight gain. Or combo the med with a stronger type antacid. Because it seems like it is when the med hits stomach acid all the bad stuff starts.

Of course if trying any of this, ask the doctor first.
