Hi, I'm in California, so bear with me. You don't drive? Here in the States our primary ID is usually a driving license. If a person doesn't drive, that person can pay about $25 and obtain an ID card that looks like a driving license, but is just an ID.
What is a "referee"? I don't understand what an ID has to do with cash...I'm wondering if, in the UK, an ID is somehow connected to your bank, or...? Lastly, who doesn't accept cash as payment? Except for sending cash through the mail (never a smart idea), when I was in Europe and Ireland everyone accepted cash. I'm sorry I'm not being very helpful. I'm trying to understand your situation. |

if you are a resident all you need to do is take your birth certificate which shows you were born there, a photo of your self and the phone number of any of your friends who may have a job who can say you are who you are, even your school teachers can do this for you. cash well that will take some time and effort on your end... here in america we have donation centers where a person can donate to that will pay them (example red cross, plasma donation centers) many people here when they need money have lawn sales where they sell their out grown or no longer needed clothing, jewlery or other items. some people even sell some of their stuff on ebay and craigslist to make some money. I dont live in wales so only you would be able to say what you can do to earn a bit of cash to pay for your ID. maybe there are some low income places that can help you do this. |

You can request duplicate birth certificate.

Here you can get a government issued ID quite simply. They usually require one of the following: source documents like birth certificate, baptismal certificate, social insurance card, or healthcard. Proof of residence can be as simple as the provision of a utility bill or other statement showing your name with current address. Surely you have at least one of these.
As for payment, if they won't take cash then get yourself a prepaid credit card. The best place to obtain this is your local post office. |

I'm still confused by this post. Who won't take cash? From where are you trying to get ID?
btw, you can obtain your birth certificate (a certified copy) at the county registrar's office where you were born OR you can get it online. |

If you have limitations that prevent you from getting an ID, speak to your mental health provider or a doctor and they might advice you on a course of action.

also many places now require a person to pay check or money order or credit/debit card, handing over cash is rarely used now for things like this. its well known that people who try stealing identities dont want a paper trail. by requiring money order, debit/ credit card or check there is a paper trail to follow. at the very least there will be a store and money order routing number to help locate the person trying to perpetrate identity theft. my point here in america theres a process now to prevent the wrong people from getting other peoples personal information like birth certificates, ID's and so on. part of that is cash is rarely used now. |

Thank you for explaining. Sheesh. Life has sure become complicated. So far, we don't have the "no cash" thing in California - but surely it will come this way before too long. |

Yeah, you definitely can get a copy of your birth certificate in the U.S. though a certified copy will cost you a pretty penny. I recently ordered a copy of my husband’s birth certificate when I realized we did not have one and was trying to get together a packet of important papers to take with us in case of evacuation. Since I live near Houston, hurricane evacuations are seeming to become more and more common these last few years. I don’t know if we didn’t need his birth certificate to get married (if just the social security card sufficed?) or if we somehow just lost his. I think I needed either his whole or last 4 digits of the social security number to order it, but I remember it was expensive! He was born in California. I think a certified copy of a birth certificate is close to $100 for those born in Los Angelos County.

I was born in West Virginia, and I just got mine for about $50. I need to get a new driver's license because I lost mine.

While different countries, I am pretty sure things are similar if not the same.
I mentioned earlier forms of proof documentation. Yes, retrieving a birth certificate can be a lengthy and expensive chore - but a baptismal certificate is not. Simply visit the parson of the parish you were baptised at (I assume you were as it is commonly expected it be done so over there). They will have a record of the sacrament and will generally re issue a certificate at no or little charge. Surely you have a government issued health card there. Student ID with a picture? Social Insurance Card? All these are also recognised source documents. If these are difficult tasks, find yourself an advocate to assist you. As another person suggested, your local mental health organisation should be able to provide you one. If you are in school. a guidance counsellor will help. You do not have to bear the brunt of this alone. |

![]() Maine charged me $5. For mine. At least 2 communities in Massachusetts that I've dealt with charge $5 for short copies and $7 for long copies. That's highway robbery to be charged so much for proof of birth. |
