Hi PC Friends,

I live in Ontario, Canada and recycling has been big here for many decades. We have a red box for all paper products and a blue box for cans, glass and plastic. The boxes are collected every 2 weeks. We also have yard waste day where you put out branches, garden waste and grass clippings. My boxes are full when 2 weeks come around and I can't imagine all of that going in land fills. Our province also started making it law that groceries charge for plastic bags and encourage people to use re-usable boxes or bags. I think it very important that we take care of our environment. Many people also have composters in their backyards, where they put vegetable/fruit waste. I'm interested to learn what kind of recycling program you have in your country and do you recycle?

In Nova Scotia , Canada we also recycle everything .
We have a large green bin for yard waste like leaves and branches
and leftover food items (compost material) which gets collected weekly. And we use blue bags for plastics and all paper products which get collected every other week . I recycle everything .
It was a bit annoying at first but it is for a good cause and it's just routine now.

Here, we recycle paper, plastic, and glass in a brown container. Funny story about recycling actually...a couple weeks ago, the recycling truck went by our house without picking it up. My parents didn't want to have to put all the stinky recycling back in the garage, so they went through the neighborhood chasing down the recycling truck. My aunt and uncle, thinking of moving into our neighborhood, were sitting in front of one of the houses and were watching this happening

Recycleables collected every Wednesday, but only certain kinds of plastic bottles, for instance, not all plastics. Metal cans. Newspapers. The condo association grinds up tree limbs and such. The city collects more dangerous chemicals such as household cleaners or insecticides, plus electronics and things like that, although you have to take those to the centers. But still people discard things or just throw them beside the highways or walkways.

We were all given a 64-gallon container for our recyclables. It is used for mixed papers, metals, glass and plastic. The cans/jars have to be rinsed and labels removed, but it can all be dumped in the same container. It gets picked up every week.

From there, I don't know where it goes. It's convenient to use only one container, but I feel a little sorry for the people who have to separate all that garbage. I would imagine it would have to be done by hand.

Never thought I'd ever have to wash my garbage before throwing it away. I sometimes wonder if I'll get a call saying I didn't clean a can well enough or forgot to remove a label. So far, it hasn't happened.

Thanks for the input so far guys. I also forgot to mention that our government in considering to ban the sale of individual bottled water. I think they've already done it in some government buildings. It's scary to think of how many bottles worldwide there must be. I bought stainless steel re-usable bottles for my girls to take to school - it safer than plastic re-usables.

We FINALLY got recycling in our area. They have been starting it here and there for a few years, but this year they are really on the ball about giving us the containers! We put plastics, cardboards and cans in one container, but we still can't recycle glass unless we take it to the recycling spot.

we have recycling. when we go to the store and by soda it costs us 5 cents extra and then when we finish the soda we take the bottles and cans back to the store and they count the bottles and cans and give us back the 5 cents per can or bottle. then they send the cans and bottles to a recycling plant down state. We also have can recycling where we have to wash out our cans the veggies and other can goods come in then put it into a separate garbage bag or garbage can we rent or buy from sanitation/garbage collector. when they come around for our garbage they dump the separated cans into a separate bin on the garbage truck. then they take it to the landfill to be put on a truck to be taken down state to the recycling plant.
Thanks for this!

I find it interesting what a difference a city or two can make! (I'm also from Ontario!)

We have blue boxes for can, plastics, and glass.
We have BLACK boxes for paper products.

And I hear that we'll be getting green boxes soon for compostable things, which is pretty awesome!

We live WAY out in the country and don't really have recycling. I always wonder what really happens to the stuff anyway. I wonder if it doesn't just in up in some landfill sometimes.
Thanks for this!

That's a good question Roseleigh. All the paper goes to a paper recycling plant and used to make recycled paper products like paper towel/toilet paper etc. The same happens with glass, cans and plastic. The great thing about yard waste is it's sent to a different area where it's allowed to decompose and it turns into compost which is then sold back to homeowners at a cheap price and used in public gardens to enrich the soil. Our earth is becoming too fragile so everyone should do their part to decrease the waste.

Well I'd like to say I do. To to be honest, the village I live in has made it very hard. The recycling center is only open every other Wednesday from noon to 3. It used to be that recycling was picked up curb side every Tuesday, and garbage every Friday. So the hours of the center were not important. Then they eliminated the curb side pick up entirely. Sometimes they change the day of the center with no notice other than a post on the door (closed today due to X, will be open X instead).

Currently we look like the Beverly Hillbillies, all the recycling is in the back of the truck. I'm off Wednesday and if they're not open I'm so fed up it's all going to the dump.

The only thing that I know that we have here is a place just to take like soda cans. We aren't soda drinkers, so everything else goes in the trash.

I get really upset when I go to the lake and see a bunch of trash by the water. I hate seeing trash anywhere to be honest. I haven't even been to one beach where there isn't trash all over it. It really gets to me when you see little fish swimming by the shore, and there is the trash. I think this year there was a oil spill in the Mississippi River from a barge, and you would not believe how many wild life animals they had to clean up, because they had oil all over them.
I guess that I'm a tree hugger too. I think it's so stupid just to cut trees down when they helps us breathe.
I often wonder when they get all this enviorment under control, what will China do. China is the worst.

we do do recycling here in the uk each area like usa is differant, in our area we get plastic sacks purple for plastic containers and drink cans food cans, green for glas
and clear for paper products
were meant to flat pack cardboard and place in a cardboard box for them to collect but we found that they would fall apart anfd it would end up everywhere so we used a storage box to place card board in, we also have a recycling center were we can take garden waste some stuff from building projects general household rubish

and we get our recycling picked up once a week by a ceperate truck from the rubbish (garbage) truck our only problem here is the seagulls as they will attack the black sacks used for rubbish so we place a cloth over top to protect bags from those birds

not all househlods recycle but i belive it would be better if it was compulsery

They have had recycling here for a while. The company asked that we separate everything, paper, metal, glass, etc. but only provided one container. I watched the truck pick up one day and they just dumped everything into one bin and compressed it in the truck. I quit separating the stuff if they just dump it all together. I also wonder if it does get recycled or just taken to a landfill.

guy - that's what they did here for a bit after they eliminated the seperate pick up. I'd put the recycling in different clear bags and it would all go into the same place. When I stopped seperating it, if they could see a single cardboard cereal box, soda bottle or can, they'd slice the bag open and leave it there, garbage going everywhere. As you can imagine, this did NOT make me happy and I complained to the board about this repulisive habbit. Now they have a system in place that if they are able to see something that's supposed to be recycled (laundry soap bottle for example) they place a red sticker on your trash. Two red stickers and they no longer have to pick up your trash, even though you pay for this service on your water/sewer bill.
