So my bf just got a letter from Illinois saying he needs to renew his plates by April 30th. Only problem is we're moving to Arkansas May 15th. Plate renewals here are 100 bucks and he would have to register his car in Arkansas right when we move because his insurance wont insure him out of state. How does he get around this? I don't think a cop will pull him over and give him a ticket for having an expired plate for 2 weeks until we can get down there to get Arkansas plates. But he is afraid he will get a ticket. But he also doesn't wanna pay 100 bucks for plates for 2 weeks. Is there any way to get around this?

Try going on the Illinois government webpage and see if there's anything that allows you to have a temporary plate for those two weeks. Kind of like when someone just buys a car from the dealer and they have that piece of paper in their back window with the expiration date on it. It's either the government webpage or whoever is in charge of the highways and drivers' licenses in your state. Like here in Pennsylvania, we have Penndot.

The plate from the state you are in now may be good for a while in Arkansas.

But yeah, they will ticket you for having an expired plate no matter how long ago it expired. I was pulled over the next day...

Really? That sucks. I told him to go to the DMV and see if they will let him buy a temp tag from ILL. But then online it said that's only for purchasing a new car but I really think that they might let him use it if he explains the circumstances.

Dear salukigirl - I think DMV might help, too. It's worth a try. Try calling the DMV in the city you are planning to move to, as well. Try calling the highway patrol or the local police [using a non-emergency #] If your problem is at least documented somewhere, I should think you would be less likely to get ticketed. Come to think of it, calling the local police and the Ill DMV seems like the best plan. But don't use the 911 #. That would just make them upset! Best of luck! billieJ
P.S. And THANKS for your post. Reminded me my inspection sticker is due!! b
