Does everyone know that Jay hatched???? I think it was dark early hours.......no one seems to have seen it. Bea is the one with scrawny feathers......Jay has been to the right side of her. This is sooooooooooooooooooo awesome!!!

Thanks greylove. It's look like they're in a rose bush and not up very high. I amazed they're safe there.

Thanks sanity seeker - Me and my girls really enjoy watching this livecam of the humming bird. Since they fly so fast, most of us don't get to see them for very long, not to mention seeing their babies at this stage. We get a few in the summer in our garden - they like the honeysuckle vine but they're so fast and busy. I even posted this link in the Q&A section - thinking its a great diversion. I said it makes me feel happy every time I watch it and find it relaxing.

I just took a look at the nest and the mother came and fed her babies.....so incredibly cute. She fed one and then the other...what a good mother she is. As soon as she flew up, they opened their little mouths so wide lol.

Too precious! What an absolute treat to be able to watch this at such close range without disturbing "Mom and babies"!

This is always my first stop of the day. I get hypnotized watching Phoebe and the kids. Several years ago a hummingbird got trapped in our garage, beating high up against the window. They're attracted to red and my hubby has a red ball hanging down so we know where to stop the car. I climbed a stepladder up to the work bench and reached up for her. It was out of this world. She held still while I cupped her and then released her.......hummingbirds are little miracles. I haven't been the same since........

It's mesmerizing watching Phoebe and her babies. She's such a devoted mama. The colors are beautiful (hers and the surroundings).

I know isn't it something! Their eyes are opening up now too. Another week and they should be flying at the rate they are going.

Yes I just saw their eyes open for the 1st time. Their long beaks are getting in the way of the small nest. I keep this window open on my computer, so I can peak at them while I'm on. My daughter also loves looking at this too.

Its fun and informative to read the chat too but mostly I just have my screen split with pheobe and kids always visible. Its very relaxing to take a minute to just watch them and be in awe. I have to always remind myself just how small they are. I saw a picture of the nest and it was pretty much the same size as a quarter. That is small!

Wow a quarter....that is small. I think the camera gives the illusion they're bigger. Imagine how small the babies were when they hatched.

I can't find the nest/quarter comparison but I pulled this from Pheobe's website....

Quote:
Pheobe builds her nests in a rose bush, and the nest is about the size of a golf ball, with eggs being about the size of a tic-tac candy (Egg Pics -- http://gallery.phoebeallens.com/thum...ch&keywords=on).

The season for nesting is October through May/early June, and Phoebe will lay four to five clutches per season. One or two eggs are laid per clutch, they hatch after 17 days, and the chicks typically fly three to four weeks later.
Trying to put this into size perspective I guess that must mean the babies are only a couple of inches long right now... if that.
Thanks for this!

The size is deceptive, isn't it? If you just watch the webcam you end up thinking that the nest and the babies - and Phoebe! - are much bigger than they actually are!
