Apologies if this is in the wrong place.
...so I'm trying to decide if I should submit a leave of absence request to the symphony orchestra that I sing in on a volunteer basis. The hour-long drive just seems far more tiring than usual of late, plus I'm currently unemployed - this is not a paying position unless we tour - so gas is expensive. I figure I could take the break and come back when I have employment, but it's the only ensemble I've been in since I graduated from college, and I was handpicked to perform a certain concert series. So I kind of feel I am betraying their trust by considering it. But I also have the assurance that I can come back when my leave is up, if they approve it. I'm not sure what to do right now and I feel kind of stuck between the pros and cons. ![]() |

![]() Is there maybe a way you can get a ride with someone els? Stopping at this point will remove you more from the 3D world "if I can put it that way" which is not a good thing. You need to get out and be part of the world to keep a healthy mind.

That's the problem, really. No one lives close to me at all.

That is sad. I would hate for you to have to stop something you love because of cost issues. I would join choirs, or even theatrical singing, if transport wasn't a problem.

It's frustrating living so far away from town - this is really the only thing I really do outside the house that's just for myself. I know I can go back once the leave period is over (I wouldn't be resigning, just telling them I need a break due to financial hardship), but if I do I'll miss the Christmas series and the spring season.
Why does everything always have to come down to money? ![]()

Im in a bit of a similar position because I happen to live in a little suburban area in texas also that provides no form of public transportation or any other way of getting around other than paying an arm and a leg for gas every other day. While it sucks, I wouldnt give up so soon. It sounds like this really means something to you and ive learned that if you want something bad enough - you'll make it happen.
Obviously finding a job would be your first priority. You mentioned you graduated college so I assume you have some sort of degree. I realize these days it is not so easy to find a position specific to what you specialize in but sometimes what I will do is find a small immediate part time position doing domething menial just to tide me over. Cashiering and waitressing and all isnt really lucrative or fun but every penny would help to contribute to your hobby. I think it would be worth it to find something temporary just to help you make it through. My first suggesstion would not be to give it up especially if the lack of money due to unemployment is your only real obstacle. The hour drive does sound kind of bleh but. It could be worse, I suppose. It all just boils down to how much you like it. Why is it all the awesome stuff is never paid labor? Haha |

I am also in a little suburban area in Texas, haha. If they'd extend the light rail out this direction it would help but I'm not holding my breath. I'm looking for work. It's slow going right now, but I'm trying to be patient (obviously if I get a job that will change things).
Yeah, I know, right? This would be the best gig ever if they paid me ![]()

Yeah. Whatever you do don't give up on the job searching. It will come. I've been out of work for about a month now, but recently got a call back. Just slam in applications. Just curious - what is your major?
And boooo on Texas. Lol. This place lacks some seriously important things. I don't know about you, but I'd ditch it. ;] |

Music education's my major. I've been trying to get in as a teacher, but if I have to I'll just apply as a substitute and see if I can get work that way. :x
Really the only reason we haven't left at this point is because my fiance's job is here and he can't move departments since he just got a promotion. Which is great for him, but... you know. Not so much for me. @_@

Ouch, yea.. That is tough...
Great major though.. I'd love to do something like that... Music is amazing but I can only imagine how challenging it is to land a position. But on the bright side I think that once you do - it'll be a great one. You might have to work your way up a little but I personally think it would be worth it. Either way, I bid you the best of luck. Sounds like you're so close and soon you'll have it made. |

Thank you. <3 It feels close and far at the same time, if that makes sense. I illustrate for people on the side, when I can manage to get the commissions, and that helps a little bit, but I think if I could find a new job things would be better. I'm still kicking myself over what happened to the last one.
Music is pretty amazing. Demanding and competitive, but amazing. I'll probably pick up another trade to pay my loans off, but my dream is to teach music history and/or sing in the opera chorus for a major company.
