Mom is now home and safe. Her dog Maggie was over the top happy to see her. She is rather tired as we had no choice but to go to pharmacy and store and this left her quite out of breath and sore. She is scheduled to go back to work in two weeks so I continue to hope for lots of healing.

I don't remember whether you've mentioned what kind of work she does. Whatever it is, it doesn't seem very realistic that she's going to go back to work in two weeks. I would hope it would depend on her condition and whether or not the doctors thought she was ready.

Not a chance. Maggie is in her element as is Amy who no longer has to share her home. Mom spent the day in bed which I am very glad about. The few errands we ran yesterday finished her off. I am worried about her returning to work in two weeeks but she has no choice as her sick leave and annual leave are now depleted and she simply cannot take unpaid leave. Fortunately she
has a sit down job but it is mentally very taxing and I fear she will be overwhelmed. I am trusting that her boss and colleagues will ease her in gently

i would hope her co-workers would be understanding-- there has been a few of my coworkers that have gone through chemo therapy; the majority of us understood before they went and after with the stress and they were allowed margin of error (as we all should have in being human, but more so due to what they had been through and still coming back from).... best wishes with her returning back to her old habits (I mean that in the best way of course)

We have just returned from the specialist surgeon (met him at last) who is happy with Mom's progress. We have an appointment with an oncologist tomorrow to check that there are no remaining cancer cells.

Mom is still in pain but improving daily. She doesn't seem to think so but I notice an improvement. She is just very slow with everything but I can expect that.

The oncologist appointment went well. Mom will be sent for scans of her other organs, bone scans and blood tests but they don't envisage further treatment. Which is just as well because this is costing by now, hundreds of thousands of Rand. Without Moms medical insurance, well, we'd be screwed!

So many people in my country without insurance and think that's best. I'll never understand them.

I'm glad for you & your mom, Sabrina. How much longer on tinder hook, before the All Clear? My fingers & toes all crossed till then (I'm double-jointed so can hold out for long periods, no prob!!)

Arrrgh! I am so frustrated and annoyed with my Mom. She cancelled all her oncology appointments saying she was too sore. When I asked her this afternoon when she was re-booking, she said she was done, that she was sick and tired of being prodded and that she wouldn't be going! This is a classic case of denial and as she is such a stubborn woman, I can stand on my head and it won't make any difference.

Sabrina, did anyone tell you what kind of cancer you were dealing with? If it was a slow-growing cancer, maybe you could afford to give her some time ... let her heal some and then come back to it a bit later?

I don't know what cancer it was but apparently it was all successfully removed from her lung with the operation. The specialist said she is essentially cancer free and that these tests are just a follow up to see that the rest of her organs are in fact okay. Perhaps he should never have said that. He also said that he didn't envisage any further treatment and my Mom bit onto that and now won't let go.

Hmm...
Well, consider what a really wicked, rough month she's had! I'd be in full PANIC/FLIGHT-mode right now ... if I were your mom. And I'm pretty calm & sensible about my health.

What do you suppose might happen if you gave her an unchallenged week or two to feel better, then asked to reschedule these appointments?

I think that is why I am not pressuring her. But she has to be back at work on Monday and it is too soon. But she won't let me help there either. I am just giving her her space right now. I might not agree with her but I won't stop supporting her.
