Have you ever noticed that women on TV always have their anatomy hanging out, but the men are always dressed?

Why do women have to walk around half-dressed and cold while men walk around properly dressed and warm?

Why, in a sunset beach scene, is the woman in a bikini and the man in pants and a sweater?

I'm very angry about this today. It's aggravating my depression. I want answers as to why women are treated like dirt by the media.

This is breaking my heart today. No matter what we do we are always treated like *****s.

You're right. Absolutely right.

And something else that totally gripes me --- why oh WHY do they always show women with PERFECT figures? The NORMAL woman in the U.S. wears a size 14. But they show women on TV who wear about a size zero or a size 2. Now come on!!!! That does NOTHING for our self-esteem!!! There is NO WAY I'm ever going to get into a size 2 because of the way I'm built! My hips are too wide - not from fat, but from BONE. I can't change that!

I wish to heck they would show NORMAL size women! They show bigger men on TV. Why not women? Grrrrrrrrrr.

I think women's anatomy is more interesting than men's (just like the woman herself :-) and a woman can appreciate another woman whereas men are not into appreciating another man's looks particularly so there are more people interested in seeing a woman than seeing a man. Women, to me, have more "movement", grace, are more interesting; men are like "blocks" to me, statues :-) There's less emotional expression usually with a man, they seem more straightforward, goal directed instead of story tellers with a bit of mystery.

I think the media is us and what the majority look at and "buy" because of, is always going to be represented. I have a Go Daddy account but I did not buy it because of their, to me, ridiculous ads. Women, babies and animals, sell products. If you do not like the pictures, if they depress you, I would not look at them. I don't get magazines and generally ignore advertising or enjoy its cleverness or make fun of its claims but am "over" buying something because of what the pictures show (people surrounded by gorgeous friends drinking beer or otherwise having fun).

I think it depends on your perspective a lot of women dress sexy so that they are more in control---I mean being a virtual goddess gives you a lot of power over men. Just my two cents.

As far as the media today and the "anorexic" chicks.... that is so dangerous to the physical and mental health of Americans especially our teen and young adult population. These are the years we are trying to figure out who we really are, test the waters and find our nich in the world. Those of us who have mental health issues on top of the media's normal and then add in the way society views mental health and the "norm" no wonder why you feel the way you do Silent Void. I think many of us share this frustration. It is sad and depressing. Over the last year new adds have come out of the UK and England.... showing plus size modles. Put those adds next to some of the models here in the US and wow.. I think we might see a turning point for the way americans and the media view weight in general... One can only hope.
Women being "less then" so too speak is something you can date all the way back to "bible times". Up until the last few decaids women were told or even just assumed the possition of stay home house wives mothers what ever. Many women never held employment or even thought of having a career. Even in today's society statistics show women make less money then men and they hold less credibility in the business world and again all of that is changing day by day.
I could go on and on. You guys can probably tell I've already put thought into these issues as they bother me too. My sugestion to some of you, if it bothers you find a way to get involved. Join a womens right org or something along those lines. You don't have to stand around with signs or anything just find more people who have this common want and need for change. Many of us women out there look up to the ones taking a stand. Thank you silent void for posting this because not many people will put this out there like you did.

I think they give people want they want... it's a business. I don't have any evidence of this but I think women watch more tv and movies and buy more magazines... seems like the programs and the ads are aimed there.

Two words, Victoria's Secret. Seriously, I find their advertising on nighttime cable to be nauseating.
I agree about your treatment of women...it's just further objectification.

We don't have to like it, and most women don't, but ... sex sells. Ask anyone in advertising. That's the bottom line.
Women are just prettier than men

Guys have the same problem; the media is full of similarly perfect guys, which also has a ripple effect. Women are not the only ones who get their self-esteem bashed in by the media.

You could instead see it as a celebration of the female body, and also, men often go around with their tops off; it's completely normal, especially on TV. I remember Sunset Beach... God-awful programme with God-awful acting, and yet it was so addictive, back when I was a kid. xD But yeh, I'm surprised the guys are all properly dressed; from what I recall, there's a dude with his shirt off, pretty much any chance he gets. For whatever reason(s) you have, you're focusing on one thing, much in the way that it's easier to recall bad memories, as apposed to happy ones.

As men get older, they get the same sagging body parts and wrinkled faces as women, but we've been conditioned to see older women as undesirable and men remain desirable. I don't think this is "natural," and while I agree the media is giving what sells, but the media partially created it. It's like sugar. They put sugar in everything now, because it tastes good. Never mind the harm it does. More people will buy what tastes good than what's healthy. It's not just one thing; it's not just the media, it's everybody.

It's not just on TV. I see it all the time in real life: young men and women on a date, the woman really dressed up, usually in impossible shoes, and the man slouching around in sneakers and a T shirt. That bothers me more for a different reason, though. I feel like the woman has put a lot of time and energy into her appearance and the man hasn't put any.

I used to think women had it worse in terms of advertising and expectations of beauty, but I see my husband suffering too. I think he's very handsome, but as he's gotten older he's been fretting a lot about his body, hair and clothes too. The difference is, he buys magazines for men that advertise with unrealistic models and I just don't go near the women's magazines any more.

Have you ever seen the TV series 'Drop Dead Diva'? The female protagonist is attractive but very full figured. Her character is complex and the show is well written but the lead wouldn't work if she were a size 2 woman.

I have been watching Drop Dead Diva from the very beginning! I can't wait for the next season! Last season ended on such a promising cliffhanger!

I agree with you on that!
It's depressing & I grew up on TV since
the late 60's.
Not all the TV shows treat women that way.
My favorite show is Rizzoli & Isles starring Angie Harmon
It treats women respectfully. And for those not real familiar
with the show Angie Harmons character Rizzoli doesn't even like
wearing a dress her character is always dressed in pants always looking sharp. Both women are smart with a great wit! Its a great show.
I try not to pay attention to shows that demean women otherwise I would get really pissed off & I get so angry even when some shows come on not being respectful to women.
If you have cable? There is a lock on the TV menu & you can just block it out.
I've done just that on that show Bates Motel.
I'm glad you have brought up this subject.

Men have the same unrealistic expectations. Big & buff with a tan & muscles & everything perfectly proportionate. The media shows us a standard of what they want people to look like -- take anything they show with a grain of salt & you'll find you're significantly happier with yourself. And the world around you, for that matter.

The images the media shows us are of the few. The beautiful, tanned, svelte, buff, sexy, PERFECT people are a small group. The rest of us outnumber them. So...

UGLY PEOPLE, UNITE!!! Let us take back our kingdoms and lands! There are more of us than there are of them!

This is the pretty people when the rest of us come for them:

Ugly? Speak for yourself! :O *looks away dramatically* I'm not perfect, but I'm damned sure that I'm nae ugly, even to someone whom I wasn't their type; this isn't arrogance, this is at least some self-respect.

Hate to sound clichéd, but you do realise that beauty is more than just external? It's also "in the eye of the beholder" as they say.

Okay, consider the Viagra, Cialis commercials with the men too young for the pill and the women they are with younger than the guy? None of these guys look old enough to have "erectile dysfunction" and if they do yippee there's a pill. I also understand there is also the gel for low testosterone or "low T" called Androgel! Some crazy stuff can happen when you smear that stuff on your body and it makes contact with others....so I've come to understand. All the diseases of the passed are like buzz words now: Rheumatoid Arthritis is RA, Alzheimer's is AD, Parkinson's is PD.

Just sayin' yup I agree sex sells and there's a pill for hard penis, and low libido.....
