Amber killed a cockatiel this morning. It belonged to a friend of mine that has been way too good to Amber! Free Killer Dog! Free Killer Dog!

I'm so upset at Amber and at the fact she killed that beautiful bird!! Don't know whether to replace the bird or not because of the difference in ages in the birds, or if Dee is ready for a replacement. I just don't know what to do about it!

If I thought it would do any good and if I had the physical fortitude, I'd kick the dog up and down the streets of this park!!! She has NO CLUE that what she did was wrong! We went past Dee's house on her walk tonight and she wanted to go right back in her house! I gave her what for when she killed the bird, too, and I just didn't say "Bad Dog!!!" Free Killer Dog! I'm so disappointed in her! Free Killer Dog! Free Killer Dog! Free Killer Dog!

Ok... sorry but sounds like Amber was just being a dog. If the situation the adults allowed caused her to be too close to the precious bird, then it's the adults error. If the dog opened the cage and jumped in, then yes, the dog is wrong, but still just being a dog.

I'm sorry this happened.

My new puppy prefers my potted plants Free Killer Dog! He WILL learn.

I'm sorry this happened also Tomi.. but I have to agree with Angie and Sky.. its not the dogs fault. She is just doing what she was breed to do. Amber just didnt know any better than being herself.

The birds were in their cage! She ran in with the intention of knocking over the cage and that's exactly what she did! No sooner had she run in the door and I heard the cage fall. Free Killer Dog!

I can't blame it on her "breed" because she's 200% MUTT! The vet told me the only thing she would take a stab at is her head. It looks like a Cocker Spaniel head.

Pilatus, I don't take my anger out on anything that can get hurt, live or inannimate. Not my way. I know this dog needs something more in her life and I'll make sure she gets it, even if it's just a refresher course in obedience for the time being. Later, I'll figure something else out.

I've just never had a pet that has destroyed another living creature.

Oh, I am so sorry. I had a bassett hound years ago and when we first got Chester, the first thing he did was go next door and kill one of their chickens. He was trying to play with it as he was raised with them. But, I guess he didn't realize he was alot bigger then and was playing too rough and one of them died.
I felt so bad that I bought them another chicken and then baked them a cake.
Being new neighbors, I didn't want them to get the wrong impression, right off the bat.
They were fine with that and we have been good neighbors for 24 years now.
I wish the best for you, Amber and Dee!!

Free Killer Dog! I think I'm going to replace the cockateil for Dee. Maybe that will erase the vision of the poor bird limp in Dee's hand! That's all I could see last night whether I was sleeping or awake. ... ... No, wait a minute! I had a dream! But that's another thread! Free Killer Dog!

Well.. I am sorry for the loss of your friends bird. I know a pet is a pet. But I do have to say I wish Heidi would have done that to dads birds.. I dont like birds AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!! They are a nuisance and dirty as all get out. But that is just me lol. You also couldnt get me to babysit a bird even if you paid me alot of money lol... uhuhhh nooooooooo way! I dont want feathers all over me or my house or to have to catch a bird either!!!

I feel for Amber because she had an intruder in HER home. If my husband would let me.. I'd take her in a minute!

Noooooooooooo... Amber didn't have an intruder in HER house, Dee did!! Actually, Dee and I were sitting outside on the porch of Dee's house. Dee had the screen door open because the birds were, she thought, safely inside their cage.

Amber was raising hell to get over to Dee... or so we thought, so Dee called her to come to her, but the damn dog ignored Dee and ran into DEE'S house, straight for the bird cage!

The only thing I can say SORT OF in defense of Amber is that Dee and her daughter ALWAYS feed Amber something. The daughter wasn't there so the food wasn't forthcoming. Amber helped herself to the birds! Free Killer Dog!

i've had my dogs kill birds, rabbits, squirrels, a badger, raccoons (remember i've lived in the country), lizards and toads and snakes. animals don't live by the value system that we live by. you can't expect a dog to say to itself, "i will never, ever kill an animal because it will upset the humans that i love"......that ain't happening.......

if the dog could get to the dog......then a huge mistake was made by whomever let that happen. spare the dog and learn a huge lesson. animals are animals..........

Maybe the cockatiel died of fright and wasn't "killed" directly by Amber? Even if 100% mutt, dogs usually chase cats and birds, cats chase birds and rodents, etc. I had a cat who caught and killed a hummingbird once! It's very distressing when a pet kills another animal.

I'd maybe get a good-sized gift certificate to the local pet store for the neighbor? That way she can replace the bird or buy supplies for her other birds/pets and decide on her own timing to do it?

Hope Amber learns to "get along" with other animals. My neighbor's hunting dog, well trained, still was catching and killing rabbits in his yard before his owner could get him to stop. I only let my cats outside during weekdays when everyone's at work because we're surrounded by large dogs.

I am so sorry to here that happened. Like You said above she had "No Clue" what she did wrong. Maybe Amber ran in the house thinking that Dee's daughter was in there and wanted to offer her food? Maybe she was just really excited? Free Killer Dog!
IMHO-People and animals are so unpredictable we have no idea what is going through there heads and what they will do next. Do you know what you want to do with Amber? How long has she been your pet for? That can reflect alot on your decision that you will have to soon make Free Killer Dog! As losing a friend or family member animals become a big part of our lives as well and you can go through the same grieving process. Dee should open up to you. Like I said it was really out of your control. She has no right to put blame on you. Especially if they open there door to feed Amber. She see's the door open and run's in. Maybe that's what she is used to.
It's not your fault and a friendship should not be dammaged for this. It's Dee's grieving time she will be hurt, but will move on.
Offering or buying a bird for her is nice Free Killer Dog! but she may not seem very appreciative in the beginning. Dee will eventually see the whole picture.

This is only my opinion ok. That's all.

I really hope all will work out for you.

heck if you were the size of a bird and had something the size of Amber racing at you you'd die from fright, replace the bird and all will be fine

I lived on a ranch for 12 yrs, too! My 18 cats did a good job of cleaning up rats and mice, one of my dogs cleaned up squirrels and gophers better than the cats! My dogs chased off a variety of coyotes, bears, and wild cats of several kinds. My animals lived out in the country where game was, well... game! They never once tipped over or ate my rabbits, chickens and other foul. They knew better! They were controlable! Amber is increasingly UNcontrolable!

I KNOW I have to do more with her, keep her occupied, teach her more than she already knows, and REteach her what she's apparently either forgotten or refuses to acknowledge... like "heel, sit, stay, drop it, come!"

She didn't die from fright. There were blood and feathers all over the front room. She was bleeding from her eyes because they had exploded or something.

*****This Is Only My Opinion. Please I Do Not Want To Hurt You With These Words******

OMGoodness. If she is that uncontrollable then maybe she need to go down. What if she turns on you or someone else? I am against hurting anything/anyone. I would not have mentioned putting her down if I didn't feel that she could possibly hurt someone else.

I would like to share what happened to my family. I hope that's ok Free Killer Dog! Let me know if you want it deleted out of this thread.
We had to put my dog down when I was 16yrs old and it hurt so bad. We had the dog for along time(years), she was an Irish Setter a very loving dog, but one day she snapped she hurt the cat next door maybe killed her still don't know to this day. My mom loved her so much she became a huge part of our family. My mom decided it would be best to do that instead of giving her away or bringing her to a shelter because what if the next person that got her had kids or other animals. My mom didn't want that on her. It hurt for a long time. I loved Mindy, but it was for the best Free Killer Dog!
You have a big decision to make. No one can make it except you.

Jlove Free Killer Dog!
