Hey guys and girls, I'm gonna be an auntie in August! I'm really excited. I'm attending my sister-in-law's baby shower in June and have already gotten a few gifts such as onesies and socks. I want to get my sister-in-law some diapers but I'm having a tough time deciding what to get for her. I'm don't care if it's green or not. I just want to get her something she'll love. Do you guys have any brands that are good, especially in the absorbency and cleanliness department?

Thanks! That was one brand I was considering, but I want to make sure and keep my eyes open so I get her a good brand. My sister-in-law is really great and I think she'll love these suggestions.

My personal experience with diapers is limited to using them as a bandage on an injured horse, BUT I saw something cute at a baby shower. Someone rolled diapers, stood them on end and made a "cake" out of them.

Something else to consider is buying clothes the baby can use in a few months. A young woman who interned with me this year is a single mom. She told me that she got all sorts of newborn size clothes for her son at her shower but he quickly outgrew them. It was a financial burden for her to have to buy bigger clothes.

Yes, absolutely agree with this. Also, spit rags, pacifiers (newborn and older, I didn't realize there were ages on them), dreft (or similar baby clothing detergent). Sometimes bottles aren't a good idea until after birth, cuz you don't know what kind the baby prefers.

One thing I like to do for showers is get a basket or trash can, that can have another use than just the gift, and fill it with stuff like baby shampoo, powder, diaper cream, lotion, and the like. It's stuff that they will probably get a bit of at the shower, but you would be surprised at how fast it gets used. It's a little cost that alleviated in the beginning, but also not that expensive for you and you can kind of get artistic with it, ribbons, and such...

Gratz on being an aunt!

I would involve her in the decision about diapers. For instance she may have views regarding things like perfumes and chemicals. Who knows, she might even have a preference for cloth over disposable. There is no reason why not to ask her. She will appreciate the kind gift regardless whether she knows or doesn't know about it anyway.

I myself insisted on using cloth. The best gift of all those I got was a year long membership to a professional diaper service.

The second best gift I got was a car seat which several friends combined together to purchase.
Thanks for this!

You may want to stick in a gift card so mom-to-be can have a break and feel pampered for a bit.

Thanks so much for the advice! My sister in law mentioned how she was really interested in Luvs, which is a brand I've heard some good things about. She's not really picky about it being a green diaper, but I do plan on getting her a pack of Size 1 green diapers to use in a diaper cake.

Good idea. I was actually planning on making her some dipped strawberries or if I'm lazy just use Shari's Berries so she has something that's just for her.

Skipping ahead to 6 month old clothes is great just remember to keep the season in mind. Warm weather clothes or summer weight clothes as the case may be.

Yes, the larger clothes in advance really helped me out as my budget was extremely limited.

I got some unique gifts from my mom and her family back in Scotland. Apparently it is a tradition to get a sterling silver baby mug. I have mine and my children's and they bring tears to my eyes.

ANother unique thing given to me which I kept and my now grown children are amazed everytime they see them is the newspaper dated the day they were born.

When my children were each born, my father actually gifted them books (one the engraved Beatrix Potter series and the other The Little Prince).

Yes, these gifts sound really hokey but the kids and I still have them and they are precious to all of us. Things like diapers and clothes are forgotten.
Thanks for this!

The one good thing my mother in law ever did for me and I have passed on to my nieces is this.

When my mother in law found out I was pregent she started buying me diapers. She bought what ever was on sale and with diapers you can usually find some on sale or there are always coupons. When ever she had a little extra money she bought diaper and towards the end wipes. I had all different brands and all different sizes. I did not have to buy diapers or wipes for a year which really really helped.

My sister was pregnant and had her baby a few months before I did so she gave me all the little things that you forget you need.

My moms friend went in the opposite direction and got me a beautiful night gown and robe. Because once you have a baby you don't feel pretty and everyone should feel pretty.

So going back since my mother in law did that for me with the diaper I have been able to pass that on to my nieces. If I had extra money I bought a big box of diaper with a coupon and if I didn't have a lot of extra money I bought a small package of diapers. I did this once I found out each of the girls was pregent. No people did not go ahhhhh how beautiful etc. but months later I still get text messages from the girls saying how they still haven't had to buy diapers or wipes yet

Oh I bought all different size diapers

I did love getting diapers, but also loved 2 other things I was given.
One was a calendar. I daily calendar I could write in every nite to keep track of little things. It's come in very handy now my kids r older & wanto know....what was my first word? What was the first thing I ate? When did I stand etc. now I can look it up bec frankly....I forget!! Lol.

I also got Robeez slipper/shoes & they were awesome! Think they're Canadian brand but can buy on the internet. They were so durable & excellent for helping them walk/crawl & not be barefoot like in the winter. Their first ones I've kept.
Enjoy being an aunt!!

It was laid out like a calendar you'd hang on the wall. The top pgs were for like dr appt measurements...big moments...pics etc.
the bottom pg was laid out for the month & you put the dates in the small block & a blurb about the day.
I kept it by my nightstand & every nite tried to write a few lines. Have to say by the third kid....I was recapping the week!
But I really enjoy looking back on it now.
I've heard they have, of course, apps on phones that do this, but this is something tangible I can give them when they're ready for it.

I had a baby book which is kinda like your calendar I really wished I had done what you did and wrote in it everyday. I know the kids get a kick out of looking back on it.

Soapbox warning:
I read that disposable diapers will be in a landfill for 500 years.

I made lots of mistakes, using cloth diapers was not one of them. I didn't use a service as I had a 'system' that worked for me.

The nicest gifts I received form my babies were homemade. A blanket, a framed cross stitch birth announcement, a bonnet. These are treasures to me.

I also (very selfishly) really really loved the small spa basket that was for me alone....

Just a couple of ideas that are not run of the mill...

Congratulations to you...

I've made several of the diaper cake gifts they make great centerpieces then added wash cloths. I topped one with a knitted bunny blanket like thing that the babies love to snuggle with, tied all kinds of little baby things to the tulle I wrapped the diaper cake (used a large paper plate as r
The base but could use a wash tub or something too. It was fun to put together. Have done several. Also have seen a diaper wreath that can be hung on the wall next to the changing table. Lots of cute ideas on pintrest. Congratulations. Have fun being auntie.

Hmm...seems pretty cool. I was thinking of getting her a gift card for a salon so she could pamper herself.

BTW....something that costs nothing except time...

1)Start clipping coupons for what she may need.
2)Make a "coupon book" of your services....an hour of babysitting, grocery shopping for her, errands, clean the bathroom...that kind of thing.
Thanks for this!
