So my wisdom teeth have started coming through my gums, and not gonna lie, it's pretty painful. I'm getting them pulled out in about two weeks, and I'm a bit nervous. I was wondering if anyone had any of their own wisdom teeth stories to share, or general advice?

I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was about 16, and it wasn't pretty - wish I could tell you different. Mine were impacted so I had to have a general anesthetic. I was pretty sick from the antiseptic. And my face was pretty swollen and bruised for a few days afterward. The good news was that once they were out, there was zero pain.

Good luck with it.

I got lucky and only got my top two wisdom teeth but I have to admit to being utterly terrified. Totally no need to be though.

I only had a local anesthetic and it took maybe 10 minutes all up but I understand the lower teeth are somewhat harder to deal with than the top.

And I keep seeing these videos of people who just had their wisdom teeth out and are acting rather oddly from the anesthetic which makes me wonder what they give you guys in the US lol

I had mine out at 18. My top ones were so impacted they had to take a little bit of my jawbone with them. To be honest I didn't feel a thing they had me so numbed up. When he got to my bottom ones I felt a little twinge and made a noise. He gave me another shot and that was it. Lucky for me Vicodin makes me sleep and that was what they gave me for pain at home. I'd wake up, take 2 10mg Vicodins, drink some water, go pee, go back to sleep for like 16 hours repeat. By the time the I ran out of Vicodin I'd slept for 5 days and my gums didn't hurt a bit. I woke up ravenous and my mom and I went out and had fried chicken. I had no problems whatsoever. Good luck to you

Ditto to the exact experience, the whole thing took 12 minutes from the time I got in the chair to walking out.

It must be something about that red head gene.

My top two came through, fairly straight, but wisdom teeth are pretty far back there and often come through with cavities already, etc. so we pulled those two, we weren't in the mood to work on them back there, the experience was not bad, just a regular extraction. The bottom two were/are impacted and I had an oral surgeon take one out that crowned but could not come up. I don't have m/any dental phobias/problems so that was okay too. The other one is still just sitting there, under the gum, sideways, but has never been much of a problem otherwise. I had to get braces on my top teeth when I was 29/30 and had another two teeth pulled then (the ones immediately behind my eye/canine teeth), but the upper wisdom teeth had already been pulled/weren't a problem at that time.

Had them all out with no anesthesia or pain killers. One was cut into pieces. The smell of the drill and saw made me a bit nauseous.

IMHO everyone should get them removed, even if they aren't painful at the moment. These teeth are very soft, and decay easily. Also they can host some low-grade persistent infections which can create a wide variety of secondary problems, including heart valve damage.

Nobody needs 'em. Get rid of them.

I had three removed (the fourth just failed to ever actually appear). One was impacted, one wasn't rooted in properly and the other was just a normal tooth extraction.

I had to be put under, and I missed two days of school since my face swelled up - but the pain wasn't too bad (I had a prescription for T3s though). I was actually eating solid food that evening.

I only had 3 of them and they were growing horizontally, had to have them cut out, wasn't so bad, I was knocked out the whole time.

My brother only had 2, I wonder if that is why I'm so much smarter than he is?

My wisdom teeth are coming at the moment as well, and my dentist tells me I have adequate space for them to come in properly. I'm glad, because I wanted to keep them.

I got my wisdom teeth pulled when I was 14, they injected me with an anesthetic and gave me laughing gas. I was semi-calm, and then when the stuff took affect I had a sudden surge of that laughing feeling, but it was all internal, and I started feeling drowsy, while that was going on I think they gave m novocain, I never went completely unconscious, but the whole procedure took like 10 minutes and it felt like even less than that.

The procedure wasn't a bother at all really, afterwards was the annoying part where the novocain gradually weakened but in the mean time parts of my mouth and chin were still numb and it was an annoying feeling like your face fell asleep.

This is a good analysis of having your wisdom teeth out:
Wisdom Tooth Extraction (Removal): Recovery, Pain, and More

I never had my wisdom teeth out....but this coming September, I will be having the local dental school remove all my teeth along with some other oral surgery needed....healing then 4 months later get 2 lower implants for the lower dentures........one time knocking me out is ALL they get.

The thing I heard was that dry socket can be painful......this article talks about it.....NO DRINKING WITH A STRAW the first few days & knocking off the scab that is formed......but other than that....it sounds like no real complications.

For me, if I'm not knocked out....they would never be able to get close enough to me to do the oral surgery.

Wishing you the best with this.....most people have gone through it.....& they are all living to tell about it & guess that's a positive thing LOL. I just hate any pain that is from my neck up.

It's been amazing for me because most of my teeth have broken off because the enamel never formed when my teeth were forming & by the age of 60 most had broken off, but no dental insurance & no money, it's taken me awhile to get things settled & get all the things set up through the local dental school.....it's still expensive but nothing like it would be to have a private oral surgeon do the work.

I'm NOT looking forward to having it done...but looking forward to after & having dentures so I can smile normally again.

I forgot to mention this in my earlier post: Bring something to listen to! I couldn't feel anything but having to listen to the crunch as they cut into my jawbone was a bit unnerving. And I have a habit of chewing on my lips. Well because of the Novocaine I couldn't feel my lips and made my bottom lip swell really bad from chewing too hard.

I made the doctor and all the nurses start laughing according to my mom. I got it done when I was 17. Apparently I kept trying to sit in a chair when they took me to the recovery room or whatever, I couldn't even stand up but insisted that I sit there and they were like you can't sit there you're gonna fall on your face Lol

Pain in gums when wisdom teeth comes is common wisdom teeth has appeared through the gum and portion of it continues to be covered, the gum can become sore as well as perhaps swollen. Food allergens and bacteria's can collect within the gum edge, and it will likely be difficult to clean the region effectively. That is a temporary problem that may be dealt with by making use of mouthwashes in addition to special cleanup methods and perhaps antibiotics. If the problem keeps ever coming back, it can be better to have the tooth taken out.
