Okay, knowing that my all-electric little box house has no other heating-cooling than the heat pump, I thought it might be wise to investigate getting a natural gas line run into my house and installing a small gas fireplace stove as a heating device. I had to call a plumber to come give an estimate for running the line into my house and hooking up the stove (which I had purchased at Tractor Supply for $400). Two plumbers came, and each estimate was
$2,000+ just to run the line! I had also thought of using propane, but it I'm kind of afraid of propane. I think I'll just wear layers instead.

that is why I like the cold better than the heat.....you can always wear layers and bundle up in a blanket.

Thanks, Kaliope. I've also thought of having a wood or coal burning stove installed, but running a flu up thru my roof would be expensive as well.

That is ridiculous! My husband has installed gas lines and it NEVER cost that much. Get another estimate and don't let the know what others are saying. Where is the closest gas inlet...the oven...your dryer?? Outside at the gas meter? No way it should cost that much!

Hannabee, there is no gas line into my house, but there is a natural gas line running down the street. The natural gas company said they'd run it to my yard for free, but the cost is having the plumber bring it into my house, a short line thru my yard, then thru the basement. I had two estimates, making me reluctant to contact anyone else.

Man I wish we lived in WV!! My husband could do it soooo much cheaper. Are you calling people like Roto Rooter?
Thanks for this!

Ugh, I understand what you mean.....I have 1 heat pump for my large 2100 sq ft home & 1000 sq ft basement.

I didn't use the heat pump for AC at all this year during the summer just used my ceiling fans to move around the air.

The only problem I have actually worried about with my all electric home is the like the ice storm we had the 2nd winter I was here when we were out of electricity for a week.....so I got a generator but it will only run the individual room heaters.

What I did last year with my heat pump (& our winter was down in the single digits most of the winter).....but it kept my electric bill lower. I set the temp at 55 & I have room heaters for my bedroom, my bathroom, & my computer room. I turn the room heater on before I go into the rooms to warn them up, or I wear the layer thing while it's warming up & then I turn off the room heater when I leave the room.

Last winter was the first winter I was able to really control my electric bill reasonably....it seemed to work......have to tape up my duct work in the basement the crook guy that installed the new bad heat pump when I first bought it......didn't do a good job & I noticed that it had fallen down....but didn't bother doing anything about it when I wasn't using the system....also found a split in one that goes into my front room....that needs taped up.....I bought the tape....now I just have to do the work.

I had a wood burning stove when I moved in but the idiots never connected it to my flu so all the smoke had been coming into the house....I would love to get a little one but I have too many other places my money needs to go right now.

Also contact the oil/gas/propane delivery/service companies for estimates as they do these installations as well and it might be less. That is who installed mine when I switched to propane and had to have lines run. The rates were better as they have package deals for the tanks, levelling of them, lines, and installation. They even can have service plans for delivery of the gas and maintenance if you want; something that might want to consider if concerned about using gas to have that extra help with it.

I think I should have more clear...DON'T call people like Roto Rooter!! Find a smaller independent general contractor who does his own work.
Thanks for this!
