Since I have purchased my home I have struggled with my basement. The struggle continues but this year I made two major investments.

(1) there was a room that had been made which was imho far too large and really closed off the space and blocked the window. I got someone in to push the room back and allow the window to been open to the main space and it really lightens up the space. This has made me happy and also, reduced the number of spiders.

But

(2) I had no floor. There had been carpet and they took that up. The floor was covered in nails and rocks of plaster etc. Plus for some reason it had like a permanent layer of dust and also for some reason... attracted spiders. I tried like 4 times to get flooring but there always was some horrid problem. I finally got it installed this week and it looks flat out amazing. Beyond that... the flooring seems to have been installed over the dirt and now... the entire area seems to be MUCH cleaner. I can walk down there in my bare feet.

I just love it and now... even though there is more to do, I could sell this place including the basement. It is a walk out so it is able to be considered living space.

I posted a review with some photos. I am just that proud.

awesome! I wish I had a basement. We live in tornado country and I always feel silly sitting in a shower stall, with my purse and iPad, wearing a bike helmet when the sirens do off. It's the best option me at the moment

I feel your pain I used to live in Michigan (not a place I thought was tornado friendly when I moved there) and I couldn't believe there weren't any shelters etc. I lived on the top floor of an apartment and had zero protection.

I know that basements aren't usually an option in certain areas of the country due to topography but you would think they would require all buildings to have shelters. Right in the building code.

Good for you! I wish I could have a basement, too--but not possible where I live. Enjoy!

Well the struggle continues.. I have to paint the walls and put the flooring on the stair risers. Then I plan on installing storage cubicles.. a weight set, a craft table, and moving the hook ups for the washer and dryer. Which I don't have right now.

The struggle continues!

Where I live we had to have a building inspector look at the finished work. Otherwise, if something bad happened there and spread through the house, our insurance wouldn't cover it.

Sounds like a good deal, though.

Well now I am upset. All week long we have been in the dark because of the remnants of hurricane jose. So today the sun came out and the floor looks horrible. I can't tell if it is because it has puckered up or if it was there all along and now you can just see it because of the sunlight. There are things that look like scratches and skuffs and you can see every single bump in the floor under it. My only thinking is that where these things are particularly pronounced I will need to get some sort of carpet floor tile to cover it up. So disappointing. I am starting to think this basement is like the money pit. I have spent 6K this year on it and it really looks bad.

This looks beautiful Emily. I've been watching a lot of HGTV and it's nice to hear stories from someone I "know" (PC is a wonderful place and is my safe space, so I like to think everyone here are all friends of sorts).

EDIT: I didn't see your latest post...what would the Fixer Uppers do?

I think I am just going to have to put in rub or flooring tiles. Just in the areas that are showing up the issues. Bummed. Thanks though.

Has the floor been thoroughly mopped since installation? It may have only been vacuumed clean and perhaps you're just seeing dust and worker shoe tracks. You said hurricane so it could've been raining and wet work boots making smears on the floor but not seen with the cloudy sky. Fingers crossed for you!

I will give it a shot but since it all goes away when the sun does.. I don't think it is dust or scuffing from the workers.. But I will give it a shot. The color of the flooring turned out to be much darker than I thought so it could be an issue in a basement.

Asked the pharmacy to switch from generic anti-D to name brand. It'll cost me a bit but I'll swing it if it proves itself a better recipe. Dunno why I didn't think to try this ages ago.

Couple of more good news things..

One of the bumps in the floor got taken away because I put down a piece of wood on top of it and then.. on top of that... a heavy rock and heavy flooring. I think it compressed the vynal just enough to make it look better.

I have been dieting all year.. with a plan that is MINE. This is the first time I did stuff, 100% with directing things. I made my first year goal today. Down 27. I might go for 30 but I made the goal.

I have a retirement account that I have been contributing to for 13 years. Since I started working. And suddenly it is about to reach a point that is something I never thought I would see. In addition, I had long ago put information into a calculator to see what my final result would be.. and it appears I estimated very wrong. Current calculations (if proven right) have me way above what I thought I would have.
