I had a door mat that was getting pretty beat up, so I threw it away and replaced it with a new door mat. It was nothing fancy, just grey, but it was comfortable on the feet and was good for getting stuff off the soles of shoes. But any door mats are a bit pricey. So yesterday I stepped outside and someone had stolen my new door mat! I think that's a really low thing to do

I'm so sorry to hear about someone stealing your doormat, Beth Rags. That is just awful!

Can you install one of those doorbell camera thingies that record who comes to your door, etc.? Perhaps you can then catch the person the next time, if you decide to purchase another doormat, or if you experience porch pirates in the future.

I don’t know if you’re allowed to have a ring camera with your apartment, but my brother took the one from the house that he sold and installed it right on his apartment door for that reason

A camera would definitely help identify the door mat thief!

Well, the darn things are expensive and the one I had was brand new. I know it's petty to be annoyed about a door mat, but darn!

Beth Rags,

Assuming you're in the U.S., have you tried your local Victims Advocate? You can report a crime - the theft of your expensive doormat, and then see if you can get reimbursed (at least partially) from the jurisdiction you're in. This will also help support the data reporting for crime victims, and to demonstrate how property crime affects victims. They will help you when the non-emergency line (either 211 or 311 in your area) doesn't help you.

Here's some information about victim advocacy:

National Center for Victims of Crime

Victim Support Services

Aftermath

Small theft stuff definitely still hurts, even beyond any monetary losses. I suppose it could have been a naughty kid or teen, but I think more and more adults are doing petty stuff. I see many around the world (especially in the US) losing trust in each other. Caring less for one another, not just strangers, but also neighbors and even family members. It's very very sad and in the end hurts everyone, including the ones that commit such violations.

Do you have a nice mat near the door on the inside of your apartment? If not, treat yourself to one that makes you feel good, when you look at it.

Hugs

I agree with everything you said, Soupe du jour!

I'm saddened about the world as we know it today. The world has gone mad!

I like your idea for the mat inside the door. It's not as efficient on the outside, but at least it won't get stolen.

Mud rooms are nice for this very reason, but not everyone has a mud room built into their home.

I used to be on NextDoor. It's really crummy, how many people have items stolen from their porch and yard.

Hey @BethRags: I’m assuming this is an apartment situation or other complex like place ? Or is it a home ? I know these ring doorbell and other overpriced options for security and privacy are useful and popular many people think that a camera is not allowed or too much money for apartment folks. Well I had an idea that my brother did with his new place. I told him that there are cheaper options but game cameras often do the same thing although maybe not as perfect or high tech it gets the job done. When used for tracking or hunting it’s usually camouflage and mounted to a tree. Super easy to put somewhere and if I understand it correctly easy to install and super affordable. I’ve seen them as low as 40$ and some have different options for storing data. My brother of course isn’t allowed to hang it on his front door but he somehow rigged or installed it at one of his windows so he can easily see what’s going on and who’s there. Whichever camera he bought he was able to buy another and link them and he has it in his home so he can see who enters when he’s not home. When it comes to places like a townhouse or condo I’ve actually seen and basic motion lights with cameras that have a certain radius or area it can observe. It might not work for you and you won’t get your mat back but maybe it would offer you a comfortable level old protection.

Not really that petty. Even if you count it as a piece of junk, that's YOUR piece of junk and you have every right to protect it and feel disrespected if someone stole what was yours.

I think that you feel hurt by it because you feel disrespected... because I think you feel lke it's the principle of the situation and not because of the item itself.

After all, if people see you don't care they took your door mat, next thing is gonna be your flower, then your toaster, then your coffee maker, then your blender, then your car, next thing you know you lost all of your possessions.

So it makes sense you feel upset someone stole your door mat.

I'd be mad too. I am trying to jog my memory as to what exactly it was, but something like that happened to me once. I think it was a plant I had in front of my house.
