I've been a subscriber to home delivery of the local newspaper until very recently (as described here).
I now have to go out and buy the paper for my wife. Today I also picked up the Sunday NY Daily News. I love it! My parents used to get that paper (along with the Long Island Press) before switching to Newsday. It has a great vibe; I think we might switch to it. I'm just curious how you'all consume news.

I no longer get the newspaper as it is way too expensive and only delivers two days a week and is only 6 pjs. You can subscribe to a daily online paper for much less.

My mom has an online subscription. Its cool because you can look at articles from decades ago in their archives. So if you want to find some random story from 1996 they will have it.

I still have a hard copy subscription to the Toronto Star which I get daily. It is a tad expensive but I prefer to read newspapers in print form rather than on-line. I have a digital subscription for the New York Times, but only read a few articles each day. I have a digital and print subscription to the Atlantic, which I really enjoy. I read 3-4 articles daily from them and then the monthly magazine.

We used to get the Boston Globe on Sundays but delivery became so unreliable, we stopped it. Digital only subscriptions now. My brother still gets a paper copy of his local paper delivered. He’s probably the only one in the neighborhood who does.
(Aside: my first job was as a paper carrier when I was 12!)

I stopped getting a print newspaper while I was still working. I never had time to read it. Seemed like a waste, though it did make good kindling for the fireplace. The few times I've gotten a print copy to read a particular article I found it light, both in quality and quality of articles.

We sporadically get a local letter for a few towns in the region. We put it under the cat litter in their boxes to make it easier to clean.

Thanks for all the feedback!
@MuddyBoots, I recall teasing a tech journalist once that everything he writes ends up lining a bird cage or cat box. ![]() @lizardlady, we don't use the fireplace any more. Besides we get enough junk mail, and we have plenty of old financial records, that I think I'd have plenty of kindling. @DocJohn, our delivery guy is amazingly reliable, and he delivers the NY Times (and probably other Tribune papers, as well). I'd be happy giving a recurring donation to the CT Mirror and AP, even though they provide free access. I'm also a sustaining member of our local NPR. I admire that "pay what you can" business model. But, my wife and I like hard copy. She's confused by technology and annoyed by having to charge devices. And I use a computer for work, so I'm not thrilled with using one to get news.

@Rthompson89, our paperboy is a man that drives by and throws the paper onto the end of our driveway before 5am. Or at least he used to until we got cut off.

I had a paper route in my teens and had 60 customers, 75 cents/week. I saved money to buy a guitar and amp and take guitar lessons. I would avoid one customer that had an angry German shepherd and I never collected money from them.

I wish I could get a paper newspaper. I think things back in the "old days" were more serene. Maybe I'm delusional. But it seems like I could just sit back and read the paper. Whereas today it's a complete bombardment through online means.

Yes, I agree. When I look for news online, I'm very distracted by ads and click bait.

I used to subscribe to a print newspaper over 20 years and it was delivered to my doorstep. But the price kept going up, while the quality went DOWN. I just got the Sunday edition, and it began to make me so depressed....the kind of stuff in it. And they gave us "special" editions like those with an NFL section and charging me for it too.
![]() Now I still rely on TV, NPR radio and some online sites like The Guardian. These days I watch/listen to very little news; there's way too much emphasis on all the bad stuff going on. I know we're hard wired this way, but I want to hear good news. You have to go out of your way to find it these days. I remember when news was mostly in print, and papers were delivered. If you didn't want that, you could get them at these machines around town. I never see those anymore. And no news stands with magazines and newspapers anymore either. The paper got thinner and thinner, with more ads than anything else. I do miss the comics and coupons from the paper, otherwise good riddance. They kept trying to get me to come back by sending me "special offers" all the time. They finally stopped.

Here's what NY Daily News says about Special Editions; their subscribers can opt out:
All home delivery subscriptions will automatically include Special Editions, including the Thanksgiving Edition (if applicable), annually. If the Special Editions require an additional fee, you will be notified of the number and cost of Special Editions included in your home delivery subscription at the time of purchase and/or renewal of your subscription. The cost of these Special Editions will reduce the price you paid for your subscription and will shorten the length of your subscription UNLESS YOU OPT OUT of receiving them. If you prefer not to receive these Special Editions, you must call Subscriber Services for the particular newspaper at the phone number in Section 12 (Contact Us) below to opt out. If you do not opt out, your account will be billed automatically and your term will be shortened. Future prices may be higher, and there may be additional Special Editions in future home delivery subscriptions. We reserve the right to increase rates and editions at any time. In addition to Special Editions, pay through dates will be affected by different factors, including but not limited to, changes in delivery, service adjustments, delivery surcharges, and interruptions in service. In general, the subscription terms are unreasonable; they can change the price and the terms at any time. Although they claim to notify you, if the notification goes to spam, you'll be liable for the extra cost: From time to time, we may modify, add to, supplement or delete portions of these Subscription Terms, so we encourage you to review periodically these Subscription Terms and the Terms of Service applicable to each service you use. If you continue to use the services after we change these Subscription Terms, you accept all changes. In other words, you won't be notified of any changes in the terms.
