I rec'd a box from Petmeds.com, in which they included some packs of catnip as freebies. My big yellow coon cat was attracted to the package, knocking it off the counter! I put one pkg. of the catnip in an old sock. He loves it! The other cats haven't shown any interest, but they are skittish, whereas he is curious and investigates everything.
It is my understanding that some cats love catnip while others ignore it. ??? Anyone...thanks!

Ahh..it is a riot to watch those cats who enjoy catnip playing with it! I've noticed with my cats over the years the same thing...some of them have really enjoyed the catnip...some don't bother with it. They definitely have their own likes and dislikes!

My cat HATED catnip. He wouldn't go anywhere near it. I think that it depends on the cat.

I used to have a roommate with two cats - both of whom LOVED catnip. We'd sprinkle it on their scratching post and watch them both go nuts. They were seriously funny to watch.

I guess its probably TMI, but catnip is said to be a cat aphrodisiac Catnip...

Two of mine love it, one doesnt. They say if you expose them too early they won't like it later on too.

Thanks, all of you, for your feedback on the catnip issue! LOL!
And, Rainbowzz, my three male cats are all neutered...so wonder if this has an aphrodisiac effect on them? Catnip...

Catnip seems like it is almost a cats version of marijuana. Some cats like catnip, some dont, some humans like marijuana, some dont.

Every cat I ever had looooved catnip, and they would eat it! I was like, eww your not supposed to eat it, your supposed to sniff it! They act like there is aliens in the house when we give them catnip, then totally mellow out.

Interesting, because now all three of my cats are ignoring it, even after I put a fresh pack of the catnip in the sock. I guess my kitties don't like it after all!

seeker wait a bit before you give it to them again. When they wear themselves out on it it seems to build up almost a tolerance. Or they just could be not in the mood too.

I gave it to one of my cats quite a while ago. I swear it burned his brains out. He got wired the first time then he wouldn't have anything to do with it.

He had a habit of wanting in through the back door and walked right through the kitchen when I was fixing dinner. Inveriable, he would saunter through just when I was taking something from the stove to the sink. He'd walk so slow, he'd get in my way. I would yell "CAT!!!" at him and all that happened was the skin on his back would crawl but he wouldn't move any faster. Before the catnip he'd yowl, jump and becoming a fuzzy blur on his way out to the garage. Catnip...

I haven't given any of my cats catnip since.

My sister had a very mellow cat but when you gave him catnip he became aggressive and the evil Chaemi came out to play. He was like the alter evil cat. It was hilarious to watch him. I haven't given any to Tyger. I might get him some tomorrow as a treat just to see what he'd do.

Catnip is mint. Mint leaves. Maybe some of the catnip has a blend or no mint at all, thus cats not liking it? Or maybe some cats don't like to feel weird? Catnip...

Mine eat it too. They roll on their backs and act weird, and then they sleep. I have tried leaving a sprig in their bed, but they always dig it out and eat it within minutes. Last year I got a little tiny catnip plant and put it in my flower garden. Now that little plant is a huge bush, and it looks like a weed. Smells nice though. I tried eating a leaf, but the liquid in it tastes bad to me, and the fiber is tough. It's good in an herbal tea mixed with mint and other herbs though. I would say it's probably a hypnotic. Has some sedative properties, anyway, for people too, but not as strong as for cats. I planted it in a different garden from my mind so that I could tell them apart. They look alike and smell similar. But the mint is sweeter and doesn't get so big (although it spreads).

They say 30% of cats are immune to catnip. My black cat didn't care about it at first, but he acquired a taste for it, and no matter how much of the stuff is available, the two cats will fight over it, and it will be gone by morning. My dogs will eat it too sometimes, but I think just because the cats are eating it.

Yeah, some love it and some hate it.

My friends cat when given nip would become bitey. My one friend (they're married) would put the catnip on his (the cats) fur and watch it go nuts. His wife (my other friend) didn't find it as amusing. Catnip...

I've always seen that cats my family has owned have loved catnip... but *shrug* some will, and some wont.

Two of my cats have completely ignored it. The one coon cat, the yellow one who is so laid back and can be handled a lot, just rolls around on the sock a couple of times and then goes about his business.
I HAVE had cats before that went wild, but not these!

actually muffy catnip is an ingredient in most herbal sleepy teas. Its considered a calmative for humans and you can indeed make tea out of it.
