Sky, I have nothing I can say that will make you feel better....nobody really does. Dogs are a special friend only some of us can truly appreciate. There will be a day when I am where you are, and I do not look forward to that day as my dog is my best friend. I have
had many great dogs and when they died I grieved as you are, for a long time. I had a very talented, smart, exceptional lab named PAL when I was a teenager, he was killed on one of his "walk-abouts" where I beieve he sought out all the local females, by a car. He was 10, and he was as much a part of my creation, as any adult, as my parents etc.... etc.... 3 years ago was the first time my parents decided to get a new dog, and I am 36. PAL was a great dog in many ways, but we must move on if we love the K-9's. I have had many great dogs since PAL, and now have a very unique CORGIE named FFINN. Read "Marley and Me" |

I am very sorry to hear that.. But you would rather have your dog die peacefully than die a slow painful death? I think not. Look on the brighter side of things or you won't feel better.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm doing normal mourning now.
![]() My former service dog, though 15, was quite healthy. It was the poison food that I was feeding my new puppy (and gave some to the older dog) that killed him. Thankfully, the dog food companies admitted it the next week, so when my new puppy became ill, we could save him. Dood Caleb Colombo is a good replacement. I just miss my Figaro. ![]()

One furry companion, whether pet or service animal, does not interchange with another. They are all individuals.
My third daughter died as a baby. The fact that I have two other daughters who are now grown does not diminish the fact that I still grieve for Jessica, and it will be 22 years tomorrow. Good heavens, I just realized why I feel so gloomy today. My condolences to you in your loss, since I share your feelings. Animals are not the same as children, but they are dear too. |

I recently read this little story and thought of you:
"And after He created woman, the Lord felt that she and the man should not be alone. He thus called forth one among the beasts of the field and spoke to it, saying: "From hence forth shall you be drawn to follow the man and the woman, to to follow their children throughtout all generations. You shall be companion and slave, playfellow and comrade. For to save your loyalty, you shall be blind to the faults of the children of man. For to save your courage, you shall not be able to foresee the time or manner of your death. For to sharpen your understanding, you shall be without the power of speech or language; thus shall neither hard words or lies come between you and them, or between the man and hiswife, or between their children. You shall be given the gift of truth to be shared in your eyes your ears and your tail. You shall leave your own kind and cleave to them, you will be willing to give all, yea unto death for them, yet ask nothing more in return than food, shelter, and love." And the dog heard, and was content."" They are God's gift. Surely it is right to remember themand mourn their passing. Huggs |

So now I'm getting over the anniversary of losing my service dog Figaro...
and my mom's birth date comes around... Jan 19th. ![]() I'm doing all I can to avoid thinking about it, but it's also my younger son's birthday. He's in Iraq right now, and I didn't send him a package because I didn't know what he'd want. (He just got what he wanted in Christmas box.) Not quite 8 months. ![]()

I guess this thread needs to be moved to Grief and Loss? Maybe when it began there was no such forum.
![]() Today mom would have been 90. I had a big family reunion at Disney when she turned 80. Not so much on her 85th but I told her I was planning "90 years of family" for today... But I knew to forget that by the time she was 87...that it wouldn't happen. I didn't really think she would die, just that she couldn't travel and was no longer interested in huge events. She did share that she wanted to fly in a helicopter over the coastline of Miami for her 90th. But she's flying much higher now. ![]() Thanks all for the support. I now turn to the living: my younger son was born this day, and he's serving in Iraq. I sent him an e-card wishing Happy Birthday. It's a mixed emotion day.

Thanks all. Once I'm through this week, then I know I will come up for air... until the week of her death the end of May.
I went to my favorite restaurant tonight. Well, first I took mom's best friend (and my friend) to the movies... where we all used to go with Mom's Red Hat group. It was a nice tribute, and good to be together in our missing her. I went on home but realized I had to have some real food...and went to my favorite restaurant, totally forgetting it was Tuesday ... karaoke night. Mom and I went to the restaurant often, and she loved a few of the dishes so! On her 85th I took her there because it was a Tuesday night, she'd never experienced the karaoke before... and I had Gene sing Happy Birthday to her. So I tried to not think about all of it, but then we had some really good singers, some opera and great songs... and the memories and tears came. I tried to be discreet sitting by myself in such sorrow. ![]() But a younger gentleman at a table next to mine offered a glass of wine, which I refused. He had one sent to my table anyway, and then offered a quiet toast. Like he knew, you know? He arrived after me, and left before me...but before he went he excused himself and asked to sit at my table... and then he shared the love of God with me. ![]() How did he know? I believe he may have been an angel ..one of those spoken about that we are to be entertaining and good and nice to strangers because you never know when you will be with an angel, unaware.

I just realized that I misunderstood your earlier post - silly me. Today would have been your Mom's birthday not the anniversary as I thought - sorry. Glad you had a meaningful day

My dog (well, family dog, but when kids went off to college it was me & Taffy) had to be put to sleep after 12 yrs. due to kidney failure. I was at the vet's every day while they were trying to save her w/IV's & had her in the sunshine on the steps of the facility w/her head in my lap. It has been 10 yrs. & I can't forget the love & companionship Taffy gave me, but I also could not allow her to be in pain which she was starting to be. I carried her up & down the stairs & had no problem w/that, but when she was whimpering in pain--I COULD NOT STAND THAT & CALLED THE VET AT MIDNIGHT TO PUT HER OUT OF PAIN...
Even now my eyes well up in tears when I remember her... SO HARD... |
