I preceed this by saying I have been depressed with no success with meds sinse January and have just started zoloft yesterday eve. I have been rather anxious....about many things.

My beloved brother in law just died of ALS and the funeral was Saturday. I am anxious and at a loss. Is there some pattern to getting better and beyond this loss. Suggestions. I have known him 35 years....and feel rather empty right now and sad and trying to deal with cumulative depression and now I suppose grief.

first let me say I am very sorry for your loss. it is the most difficult thing I think anyone can endure. There are alot of things that happen in the grief proccess. It is never in a certain order either so everyone goes thru it differently. I think the first thing though in recovery is the acceptance of the loss. I think that didn't happen for me with my granddaughter until we had her autopsy results and that took 5 months. Once I accepted it it began to get easier. When it first happens though I think that is very difficult to do.

For each person, it'll be different

For me to recover from loss, it helped to carry on with normal activities (going to work was one of the best things for me to do)
And it helped to plan various activities.

It takes time, and the loss may never really go away, but it'll be easier to deal with.

It helped for me to acknowledge the goodness of the person and to be thankful that we had time to share.

And it helped to take art classes.
