Has anyone here had a bone marrow biopsy?

Please tell me about your experience. I hear they drill a hole into your hip bone?

They say I won't have to be knocked out (BIG FEAR) and that I can just be sedated. Anyone?

Thanks,

Petunia

I'm not a medical doctor (nor do I play one on tv) but it is not a big deal (to doctors) and can be done in your hematologist's office. I think it's from the pelvic bone...but it is all anesthetized... still, gotta be sore later, ya think? I'm surprised you haven't had this done before, but glad to hear someone is going to get you a definitive answer by doing this. ((((pet__)))))

Thanks Sky and Ozzie,

I haven't had it done before because I refused. You know...it's the needle thing. He has done every test possible to avoid it, knowing my history and all.

I got a phone call late this afternoon from hem/onc (who never calls direct Bone Marrow Biopsy) who is strongly recommending this be done ASAP.

I don't know what I'm more afraid of. The needle, being "put under" or the end result. I'm tired of being so afraid of everything.

All I know is right now my spleen hurts like hell.

T's gonna get an earful Monday, lol.

Thanks again...

I haven't had one, but various biopsies I have had, hurt, only cause they were aspirations into soft tissue and no numbing agents were used.
I understand bone marrow biopsies can be painful, but I am sure in today's time they have some topical numbing agent, if not, a light sedation may be used.
I am so sorry to hear you are having medical problem(s), I will be sure to keep you in my prayers, sweet lady Bone Marrow Biopsy
Please feel free to let us know how you do, or feel free to pm us. Bone Marrow Biopsy
Take care now,
Good wishes and love,

I had a biopsy last year... on my lower thigh... I wanted to watch and the surgeon said SURE! He then tilted the table back to I was nearly staring at the ceiling! I told him... um I'm good but not that good...gonna be kinda hard to see from here. He ignored me. Anyway, the area he biopsied is almost faded but the place he took the sample is quite evident... sigh. I think yours might be with you on your side or stomach... no chance on seeing what's going on... btw I didn't feel anything till later.
