Has anyone had a cervical biopsy done? My gyno is recommending this since my papsmear came back with abnormal cells- she doesnt think anything is wrong but she wants to make sure, how is a cervical biopsy done?

i have sat through 2 of them with my daughter. it is done with stirrups and a speculum, actually very similar to a pap, but they snip instead of swab. you are not sedated. they are very uncomfortable, but not for long. good luck.

over here it is called a cone biopsy .... it is a very common operation and also really common to have abnormal cells ... most of the time they rectify themselves without need of further treatment .... even if they find anything which is rare it is very treatable ..... hope this has put your mind at rest ... good luck, keep us posted love Jinny xoxoxoxoxoxo you are being looked after and are in the best hands Cervical biopsy

I had one done and found it to be no more uncomfortable then a regular pap. It's called colposcopy...the doc actually looks at the cervix with a special scope. A mixture (vinegar and water) is either brushed or smeared on the cervix...this turns suspect areas white. Any area that is suspicious is then snipped for a biopsy.

If the biopsy comes back abnormal then there are two different procedures that can be done...a LEEP, which is done in the office under local sedation, or a conization (cone biopsy), which is done as an outpatient surgery...these depend on the severity and extent of the abnormal cells. When a cone is done, the biopsy is done immediately (while the patient is still under), so the surgeon can be sure that all abnormal cells have been removed.

when they say it may pinch that is when they are snipping. uncomfortable, but not unbearable. a friend to hold your hand is nice.

This is probably when the doc uses a small brush inside the (very tiny) opening to the cervix. They are really fast when they do that because that can cause cramping and dilate the area (only as large as the brush is)...the speed causes a cramp but it is over quickly. Some people feel it, some don't...I'm one of the don't. :P
