My doctor has just diagnosed me with hypothyroidism. Wow....no wonder I keep having trouble keeping weight off. I've been placed on a new medicine called levothyroxine, which should speed up my thyroid. I've felt so icky for so long...always sick or hurting in some form or another....another ailment to add upon the growing list of physical and mental complaints. I thought the worst of my conditions was steadily degrading vision and osteo-arthritis--now this too? Did I mention that I'm only 19? Just what kind of health will I be in when I turn 50?
I'm really stunned right now. Just...wow. Wow. ~Alexiel

I haven't been diagnosed yet...but my doctor told me yesterday that my thyroid levels were high (I don't know if that is hypothyroidism...but its something thyroidism...lol). Going today for more bloodwork. I'm only 25, so yeah, shocking is a good word. I turned 25 and my body has gone to hell.
PM anytime. ![]()

Sorry to hear of your ailments. Please let us know how the new med is working, I'm curious. (1 day...maybe a dx will finally put you on the mend.) Petunia |

Hey. I'm glad you are getting treated. I was diagnosed last year and since being on levothyroxine, I have much more energy and have lost 23 pounds! You are going to feel better soon. It takes a while for the medicine to begin working.
In fact, today my was yearly physical. I had the works done today and I am now exhausted. Plus, I had an x-ray of my shoulder, which has been causing pain. But everything looked good. I'm hoping you are feeling better soon, too. |

Hi OrganicAngel
![]() I have been hypothyroid now for nearly 15 years, after having Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. You're lucky they found it anyway, took them years to dx mine, they kept saying it was psychological. The medication definitely helps & you will have more energy. Carl Lewis, the sprinter, is hypothyroid, so it's obvious that one can function. Some people need T3 replacement as well as T4, but the blood tests ![]() It's a shock, but an accurate dx is the start of the improvement. ![]() ![]()

I recently had my thyroid removed. They found that I had Hashimotos thyroiditis (never diagnosed) along with a small amount of cancer. I will have levels taken at the end of Sept. to determine if I will need radioactive iodine for the cancer. Currently I take 137 mcg of Levoxyl and hope the energy kicks in soon. To be perfectly honest, I am happy that I have had it all removed. It seems that people that still have their "sick" thyroids in place, continue to have problems regulating the medication that they need to help the thyroid function better.
I always thought of the thyroid as the "appendix of the neck"....wow, was I wrong!!!! I hope you feel better soon. Take care. |

Thank you all so much for your support! I feel so much better about my dianosis and the levothyroxine that I am taking. I can't wait until the meds start taking effect in a few weeks. Hopefully, I'll lose some weight and feel more energetic--this constant lethargy is killing me. It's hard to go back and forth between my college classes because I get tired so easily. And I used to be such a bouncy person! It's reassuring to know that there is a legitimate reason behind how crappy I've been feeling lately. And everyone's feedback is just awesome--I am so much less worried now! Thanks again, all of you. The PsychCentral gang is the best! ~Alexiel
