Well, I received a letter from my family doctor. I have a normal total cholesterol of 185, which is good, HDL of 4 and LDL of 102, with a triclyerides of 213 and they want to see me. Only the triglycerides are elevated.

I've been on Paxil, Xanax, and Geodon (used to be on Risperdal) for a long time and I'm thinking the triglycerides might be related to my medications. Everything else is normal. I only eat red meat about three times a week and I am slightly anemic. Anyone think these meds affect triglycerides?

I don't know about meds affecting cholesterol/triglycerides, but margarine & coffee will. Cut back on them if you use either & you'll probably see some results. Eating more fish, too - maybe substituting one of your red-meat days for some tuna or salmon steaks, eating more oats, adding some Omega-3 oil to your diet, that kind of thing.

I've been working on the diet thing myself - I don't want to end up on a statin drug. Usually my cholesterol levels are too low, but when I start using margarine & drinking too much coffee, they spike back up, so I've been trying the nut butters, avocados, olives - looking for the good fats, in other words.

Thanks. I really didn't think there was anything about my diet that was causing it. But I do drink coffee. I always use olive oil and my good cholesterol is a good level - 40. I'm sure my doctor will talk to me about diet. It's just that I'm confused because I'm anemic - so do I need more red meat or less? I did think about eating more fish.

It might be best to find out if there's a solid reason why you're anemic.

Iron comes from a lot of sources, not just red meat - there's all the green leafy veggies to think about. And some supplements are easier for your body to absorb than others. Your best bet might be to have your dr. (or anyone that goes to one) recommend a dietician or nutritionist.

Good luck!
