Hi all, I accidently cut my pinky finger rather badly earlier in the week, during my trip to A&E (ER) I was told i had severed some nerves. the nurse said they will grow back, but it will take a while. I was just wondering if anyone has experience of this and how long a while is likely to be because the constant tingling is starting to get to me.
Hugs from:

((yellowted)) - sorry to hear about the injury to your finger. Did you get stitches? I don't have experience with severing a nerve and hope it gets better soon.

Ouchies! Sorry you severed some nerves.

Nerves can take quite awhile to mend, months and even a year or so in some cases. It can cause tingling and pain while in the process.

I'm not sure what exactly can be done to make the process less painful or less tingly. Vitamin B may help with the regeneration process, but I think it's important to speak with your dr about this. Hopefully you won't require surgery to the nerves and they will repair themselves.

Wishing you well!

Yes...could take a while. I know someone who cut a major nerve in the arm. It took years to grow back. Just guessing here but a smaller nerve in the pinky should take considerably less time than that. If the doctor who treated you couldn't put a month/year estimate on the amount of time it will take then I'd say that it can't be done other than offering anecdotal examples. Good luck

I did the same thing when I put my hand thru a window accidently.

Nerves grow back at the average rate of one inch per month. That's the AVERAGE. Some times they grow back quicker, sometimes slower. Alot depends on where they are, and who the patient is. So be patient. My finger is still numb after MANY years, so obviously there was permanent nerve damage. But it doesn't keep me from using it, or doing anything.

Best of luck and keep healing! God bless. Hugs, Lee

Thank you all,

Lynn P...luckily no stitches because although long and deep the flap is narrow and too close to the nail. they glued it and placed steri strips over it before padding and strapping it up.
I had the padding changed today as it was pretty yuck and there was definitely some numbness along the outer edge of my pinky on the flap bit but the tingling is still there in ther rest of my finger. the doc said they expect it will be tingly for a good few months ! the silly thing is the cut doesn't look that bad now the skin is back in place but as i am allergic to all types of sticking plasters/tape the strapping they have put on goes right down and round my wrist making it look much worse than it is!

Be careful about the sticky tape, If it gets too inflamed you'll have to take it off. It CAN BLISTER. I'm allergic to tape too, and once it blistered when they taped my CHEST -- and oh boy did that hurt when they took the tape off! YIKES!!!

So keep an eye on it. Don't let it blister!
