http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/0...ep-exercising/

It appears that there are psychological benefits of exercising provided exercise is done regularly. When the exercise stops, the brain produces fewer new cells, reducing memory and other functions. The brain benefits of exercise disappear quickly when the exercise stops.

. . . the brain benefits “wear off quickly,” said Dr. Michael Mazurek, a professor of neurology at McMaster, who oversaw the study. “This is analogous to what happens to muscle bulk or heart rate following exercise withdrawal.”

Gilberto Xavier, a professor of psychology at the University of Sao Paulo and senior author of the study of hippocampal neurons, agrees. “Brain changes are not maintained when regular physical exercise is interrupted,” he said, adding that, “though our observations are restricted to rats, indirect evidence suggests that the same phenomenon occurs in human beings.”

Meaning that the lessons of both studies point in the same direction. For the ongoing health of our minds, as well as for the plentiful other health benefits of exercise, it might be wise to stick to those New Year’s exercise resolutions (to exercise regularly).

How about this - I walked to and home from my T appointment! It's about 3/4 mile each way. Going to try to lift some weights before going to bed.
Thanks for this!

i did several loads of laundry...up and down the steps several times...does that count? Along with mopping the kitchen floor, putting the Holiday tree stuff away. Of course and cooking three meals. i did not walk around the block today. i hope this counted for something.
Thanks for this!

I've been practicing tap every time I go out to smoke... mostly cause it's cold(!) and tap will certainly get your blood flowing.

I lifted weights today - biceps, triceps, chest and shoulders. Yesterday, I walked a mile. I need to do more aerobic exercise (where I sweat) and cut my calories further. I need to stop buying desserts!

The appetite workout. See: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/0...ut/?ref=health

The summary says it all:
Exercise “improves the body’s ability to judge the amount of calories consumed and to adjust for that afterward,” says Catia Martins, a professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, who led the study.
But not all exercise. Running, it would seem, better hones the body’s satiety mechanisms than walking. And longevity counts. You need to stick with the program for several months, Martins says, to truly fine-tune appetite control.
