Can you bend your ribs without breaking or dislocating them? I ask because I normally sleep on my left side with my arm folded under me, but lately I've felt a mild pressure in my lower chest. It doesn't hurt, but when I hold my breath, it looks like my lowest left-hand rib is recessed or something. I've stopped sleeping on that side, but I was wondering if this may be a problem.

Also, please don't suggest I see a doctor. It won't happen.

Your ribs are directly connected bone to bone, so no way they can bend or dislocate as there are no joints or sockets attached.

If something is protruding there AND causing pain, its definitly not to be ignored.

I will not tell you to see a dr because you asked me not to, but I will definitly say do SOMETHING about it, what that something is remains entirely up to you.

Nothing's protruding, and it doesn't hurt. It's just a little uncomfortable.

Can you be a bit more specific for me?
I'm not a dr but am quite familiar with anatomy and may just be able to offer some kind of useful info and would hate to miss that opportunity since you won't see a dr...

I assumed it may have been protruding because you mention a specific rib and the word "dislocation". My apologies.

The discomfort is when pressure is applied to a certain region, where is the discomfort?

i.e. Does it feel bruised and battered on the outside, or does the pain feel like its from within?

Also is there any swelling or any visible signs that something is not right?

I hope I don't sound snarky or whatnot, I promise I am trying to help and don't have the best manners this time of night, I tend to present an "attitude problem" around midnight and apologize if you are getting that vibe from my reply

I don't actually feel it when I apply pressure unless I'm lying on it. I mostly feel uncomfortable when I breath too deeply. I don't always feel it, either, but it's in the area of the lowest rib on my left side, more to the front than back.

It's just a mild pressure on the inside. I'm not sure how else to describe it.

Only a slight, but sudden, dip below the rib. On my right side, that dip isn't there.

This might sound off side but I promise its relevent to my thought process and ruling out possibilties. Do you have "ripped abs" and if you do, did the dip only become visible after your abs became defined?

I'm no doctor, but your symptoms sound like costochondritis. I had that, it's typically not serious. Good luck!

I agree with Shiny. It could also be as simple as a pinched nerve in your spine or a habit of breathing too deep too fast, something you may be unaware of doing and most common in people who suffer from anxiety and or depression. It can cause a lack of oxygenated blood in the brain, which displays as discomfort when inhaling deeply, especially while sleeping... And easily fixed by learning to breath correctly.

I asked about your abs btw because my brother's top left one is missing. He has a dip now that he's become ripped and takes part in body building competitions, but lucky for him the right pose hides it well

So quit holding your breath

If it doesn't hurt, it can't be bruised, broken, bent, etc. It is as it is "supposed" to be for you. Did you look at it before you started sleeping on your side? You have to have a comparison thing going.

My skull is "dented", long valley thing going on that sort of distresses me but when I realized I'm never going to shave my head (to see what it "really" looks like :-) it doesn't really matter; I'm 62 and have lived with it this long. . .

I have the same thing Perna and it bugs me too. I was reading about head massage and since I am so stressed and tense I figured it would help. I think I have softened my valley a bit with massage.

It's dented because you always sleep on that side. when you stop sleeping like that, it should go away. it's probably pressure on your left diaphragm (lung muscle) causing discomfort. you also have rib muscles that could be it as well.

use of pillows, blanket in between your arm and body should help, or have your left arm stick out and under your pillow, just sleep on your back
