I've had them before... it's not unusual for me... they're technically a visual hallucination... and it took me a while to figure out what it was I was experiencing...

anyone else have them?

I have them, tho it's been a while since I had one. The squiggles and lights and strange shapes are called an aura. Mine starts in the center of my vision, and sort of blooms, then recedes to the edges. Actually kind of cool...mine is usually a cluster of lines pulsating different colors. I hope your headache goes away soon.

I've had migraines with aura since I was a kid. I get that jagged semi-circle visual that's shown in the video, but for me it's always accompanied by intense pain. And by the time I can see that, I'm usually in pretty deep.

It's actually how I was able to self-diagnose; when I was about 8 (my parents wouldn't take me to the doctor unless I was bleeding out, and even then it was kind of a toss-up), and I saw a picture of that same visual pattern in the entry on migraines in our encyclopedia set. Didn't make much difference at the time, as even if there were any solutions going back then, my parents wouldn't have paid for me to visit with a specialist who might be able to help. At least I know now though, approximately how long it's been going on for.

Silent migraines aka without the pain, but I get the auras, nausea, photo sensitivity, and weak and dizzy. I call it the dreaded green spot, because my field of vision becomes largely obscured by a bright chartreuse-line green spot generally in the center of each eye's field of vision. With eyes closed, even in total darkness, the spot(s) are still there, and kind of ebb and flow slowly, like a lava lamp. At its worst I can barely see, kind of like staring into very bright light. Excedrin migraine is my best friend then, along with a chewable called Nausene, laying down or reclining, and dim light. I'm grateful I don't have the pounding head pain, they are bad enough as it is.

I've had a migraine headache start today..... it started about 24 hours after my visual migraine....

I'd call it a 6 out of 10 for discomfort.

I get them at least a couple of times a month. I'm on verapamil to try to prevent them and Migranal nasal spray (amazingly awesome med) for when I get them.
I get the aura first, then when that goes away and I can see again I get the intense pain.
Little known fact about those of us who get migraine with aura: birth control pills are not recommended because they increase the risk of stroke which is also increased if you get the auras.
Thanks for this!

It may not have actually been a migraine I had yesterday.... it's likely it was a sinus headache...I felt sinus pressure, took some nasal decongestant... and it went away.

I don't really get migraines with pain but I got migraine auras/silent migraines. Most common is a bright light coming from the side or top, once I actually thought it was a real lamp, LOL. A few times I got weird sensations and nausea. Also a few times I had a sensation my balance was off. Very uncommonly I had the zigzag thing but that one was actually quite cool. It started with a small dark spot in the middle of my visual field, then it grew and I wondered what was up so I googled it as it happened, until I actually couldn't see well enough, and then the zigzag thing grew out and moved away from the center. I must say it was quite amazing.

Yeah, try explaining it to a doctor.. My wife is a nurse practitioner and saw her own patients in a doctor's office for many years.. She had no idea what I was talking about... she thought I was talking about the "floaties" that everyone has in their eyes.

I showed her the video, so now she knows.

Good God, they don't know about something as simple as that. There are articles about visual migrains on Wikipedia, WebMD, etc. Maybe calling it the proper name, Acephalic Migraine, would help, they might know it by that.

Or, they might remember as much of the neurology they took in med school/nursing school as I remember of the 3 years of Russian I took in my first undergrad 30 years ago - which is diddly squat.
