I have recently been diagnosed with an ovarian cyst about the size of a satsuma ( Advice on ovarian cysts?)that's what the doc said lol ... I was on morphine for pain for 3 days, then it subsided until I only get pain if I cough or sneeze ....also I am on anti biotics, strong ones for 4 weeks altogether as I had a pelvic infection. The day before the pain Iwas doing some rather heavy gardening and helped my hubby pull a tree up. The doc said Icould have twisted the cyst, cut the blood supply off or something???? The thing is I am so tired all the time, sometimes my energy levels are zilch and I'mwondering whether t has anything to do with the cyst (hormonal)or the anti biotics or a mixture. I had a hysterectomy to remove my womb only, I still have my cervix and both ovaries at the moment. They are going to scan me on May 23rd again to see if it's the same size or whether the cyst has shrunk. Do you think they will take out the growth if it is still big? I know this sounds silly but I really want it taken out because the thought of it in there just freaks me out! Advice on ovarian cysts? Advice on ovarian cysts?bloomin thing .... my hubby says i should chew satsumas and not swallow them whole haha Advice on ovarian cysts?

Anyway, just wondered if anyone else had any experience with this kind of thing.

It's kinda funny you ask- my grandma has cancer in the well, reproductive areas (we think) and my aunt before the diagnoses had her cysts removed (she won't be able to have another kid, but she was happy with just one anyways.) From these two expiriences you can have the cyst removed and if it's anything like my aunt's case they will take everything but the ovaries out, Or maybe they'll just remove the ovary that has the cyst (if it's just one) or maybe just the cyst?

In any case, I say if it's giving you that much trouble then it's gotta go.

HI (((Jinnyann)))

I used to suffer from ovarian cysts. Although they were large they always went away after a month or two. They are normal for some people. Yeah, they can be very, very painful and sometimes your tube can twist and cut off the blood supply. They can also rupture. Since you don't get a period you may still be cycling. Actually, a cyst is a normal occurrence. It's how the egg is released each month. However, when they don't change in size or get bigger instead of smaller it can be a sign of a problem. (UMmm I have no idea what a satsuma is but mine were 5 cm.) !!! Advice on ovarian cysts?

There is no way of predicting whether your cysts will go down in size or not. You just have to wait until the repeat scan. If it is still there or large then they will probably remove it to check out whether or not there is a malignancy.

I used to be frightened of these but became so used to them it began to feel normal.

I hope you can get some rest.

Take gentle care.

I too suffer from ovarian cyst - but mine have never gotten big enough for my doctor to warrant surgery as a means of correction... but they have gotten big enough to inflict severe pain upon me through out the month - and I suffer even more when they burst....... so if I was you I would go for the surgery and have them removed before they continue to make you more miserable with each passing month.

Thanks Rhap, strangely enough I got out of bed a bit quick thismorning and i felt it twist or something, the pain was awful .... it has been niggling again all day even after painkillers. I'm just taking it easy and doing a spot of writing because I'm terrified of that pain coming back. I am going to try my best to convince the consultant to take it out.

Thanks for responding, Jinny xoxoxoxoxoxo Advice on ovarian cysts? Advice on ovarian cysts?

jinnyann, I had a big cyst for about a year. It was very painful and was excruciating when I would ovulate on that side. The pain would knock me out and I couldn't walk or talk, would just lie on the floor at my office and moan if it happened at work. The pain could just come so unexpectedly, one minute fine, the next on the floor. Apparently, it was caused by my cyst rupturing periodically and bleeding out into my abdomenal cavity. All the blood and fluid in the abdomen is very painful apparently and it takes the body a couple of days to resorb all the fluid.

There are different kinds of cysts. Some are the normal, periodic cysts you get due to the ovarian cycle. Some cysts are not of this type and are not normal.

My problem went on for about a year. My doctor and I were very patient and waited for the cyst to go away on its own, as some types of cysts do. I had scans about every 6 weeks to measure the size of the ovary. Imaging of ovaries is very primitive so they can't really "see" what the ovary looks like very well, just get some measurements of size and density. Another thing I did was start talking birth control pills. I did this to get a rest from the pain, and to give my ovaries a rest from ovulating, as my doc thought having a vacation might help the ovary heal. No such luck. Preventing ovulation did remove the pain but did not help the cyst heal or go away.

Finally we did surgery and the ovary was huge and didn't even look like an ovary, according to the pics my doc showed me. It was swollen to the size of a satsuma or larger, lol, and a deep purple-red (filled with blood). My other ovary was perfectly normal, a light yellowish-pink almond shaped thingy. So out came the bloody satsuma. There was no way to separate the ovary from the cyst, they were completely entwined. I had that surgery in January and although my wound took over a month to heal due to infection, I have been able to go off birth control pills, my remaining ovary has resumed ovulation, and I have had no ovary pain at all. I do not miss that alien ovary-thing that was in my body at all. (I am done childbearing.)

Anyway, that was the conservative approach. Many people would not have waited a year to see if the problem would resolve, but I often go for the least aggressive intervention.

I really like not having to worry about the surprise incapacitating pain and carrying around vicodin in my purse to deal with that.

Good luck to you!

thankyou so much for replying. Mine is a satsuma too lol, hubby said I should have chewed it efore swallowing the darned thing Advice on ovarian cysts?

I had a hysterectomy 3 years ago so I don't have a cycle although I still ovulate. The pain is coming and going but right now it is bearable. I am going to try and have the cyst removed because, like you say I don't want to keep wondering when it will flair up again. Thanks again, I'll keep you posted Advice on ovarian cysts?
