Has anyone had cataract surgery? I have cataracts in both eyes and have to have surgery. I'm wondering how long before I'll be driving after the first surgery. Doc says it should be soon, but is individual -- case by case as everyone is different.

If anyone else had this surgery I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks.

Hi Sister,

My Mom had cataract surgery. She is high risk because of all her medical problems and it was a peice of cake for her. She doesn't drive, so I can't help you there, but she did extremely well in a very short of time.

My aging mother also had cataract surgeries. She was seeing better (colors, brightness) within a day or two..though focus didn't settle down for another few days I think. The main problem she had was the surgery was not in early morning, and she couldn't eat, so by the time she was allowed to go home she was starving and ate too much.... she became sick from doing so (anesthesia.)

my co-worker had it on both eyes rather suddenly several weeks ago. our insurance was ending so she got her eyes checked and found out she had cataracts in both eyes.

she was back to driving in a couple of days and back to work in less than a week, using eye drops and special sunglasses (especially here in sunny Fla!) and wearing protective eye covering at night (to keep them from getting rubbed).

it was very easy for her.

the biggest problem was...

her house wasn't as clean as she THOUGHT it was! hehe

Best wishes to you! I hope having it done makes a bid difference for you.. brightens your days!

Thanks all for your replies.

Echoes, I don't think my house is clean to begin with....so I am REALLY in big trouble afterward.

Sky, I think my surgery will be early a.m. so hopefully I will avoid the problem your mom had. Left eye is being done June 13th and right on June 27.

Yeah, makes me feel ollddddd, but I am young (or so I think) to have these and my sister ( 4 years older than me) has had this surgery already.

I am looking forward to not wearing distance glasses anymore. Now, THAT will make me feel young as I have a strong prescription. Will probably still need reading glasses....oh well.

My best friend had her's done when she was in her early 40's - and she was a high risk... and she passed thru it with ease... then her husband had it done a couple years ago and it was an ease too...

He was thrilled that he doesn't have to wear glasses anymore - he ice fishes LOL and his glasses always steam up from going in the warm shanty...

Thinking good thoughts for you... freewill

I'm having a consult Monday... for LASIK or such...and will find out the truth as to whether I have cataracts or not. (My original eye doctor, whom I saw for umpteen years after the injury said yes and they were trauma induced due to their sudden occurrence and my young age) but then I was switched by the ins co to see another doctor who threw out the records and claimed I don't have cataracts and they aren't ever caused by trauma cataract surgery If I have cataracts, I can't have the LASIK. I'll let you know when I do.

Sky,

hmmmm I haven't heard of trauma causing cataracts. I was told by one doctor that vitamin deficiency, sun damage and GENETICS are the main contributing factors. But he isn't my eye doc now either.

They have been watching mine for a few years and in my case, I know that genetics is a major cause because my father and older sister both had the surgery!

Good luck....let us know how you make out.

My dad had the surgery. I think he rested up for about a week before driving or anything. He's in his 70s though. He never had any problems from the surgery. He couldn't believe how bright the colors were afterward and mentioned that the bedroom walls were not the color he thought they were. And that a lot of shirts that he thought were cream-colored were actually white. He was a big fan of the surgery results. cataract surgery

Good luck!

When my dad had the surgery he was about 71. He was so pleased with it since he had worn glasses all his life and after the surgery didn't need them anymore! He wasn't driving at the time but I do remember he was doing fine after 3 days.

Healing thoughts and prayers for quick recovery for you!

The first surgery is next Wednesday. Hmmm I have been posing without my glasses and my son said I look younger, bless his 21-year old heart.....

My mom had her left eye done today. We go back to the eye doctor for her one day check up tomorrow and she should be driving by tomorrow afternoon at least that was the way it worked after her right eye surgery. I'm glad cuz I don't like driving her trailblazer LOL.

She had 20/40 in her left eye before surgery and I think that is what her right eye was too and the day after her right eye she was seeing 20/25 and a week later 20/20.

Good luck!!
