Ok. I got a piercing in my tragus over a year ago, and I LOVE it, thing is it's never really healed, and I think that I could be alergic to the metal that was used for the peircing. It's apparently 100% white gold. Does anyone know if you can be allergic to gold? Taking it out is NOT an option.

Yes, you can be allergic to gold, it's a lot less common than metal allergies, but I have a friend who raved over my belly ring, and I suggested that she get one, too but she said she's allergic to everything, even gold and silver. So yes you can be allergic, and taking it out should be an option b/c you can't keep in something that irritates your skin! I had to take out my belly ring, it got irritated... it sucks b/c now all I have left is a scar... but it's better than the pain I was in... I didn't even realize how much it hurt until I took the thing out...

Yep it is possible to be allergic to gold. Have you tried just a nickel free metal? They usually use those types when they first pierce ears. Or maybe some silver?

A lot of piercers use either implant grade surgical steel or titanium jewelry. My tragus piercing has the surgical steel and it has never been a problem. It healed much more quickly than any of my lobe or cartilage piercings that were pierced with gold. Most people don't react to surgical steel or titanium. I know that surgical steel doesn't sound really pretty but it has a nice dark grey finish and you can choose the ball for your captive bead ring or barbell. I like hematite. : )

Good luck--I love tragus piercings. I'm saving to get my other one done.

yes you can be allergic to gold... but it might be gold plated?
They have plastic rings too (though I'm allergic to that) maybe that would work? Do you normally take a long time to heal?

Hi Spaz,

I hope you will go to a doctor to have it looked at if it is not doing better by now. It would be well worth it to have some antibiotic lotion or pills for it.

Feel good soon.
