I was wondering if any of the parents on here might have some suggestion I could use to encourage my 20 year old son to be a little more excited about getting a job (pt or ft works for me).

Thanks.

We made a huge mistake with our daughter, too spoiled and not having jobs ruined her life. Not so our son who has always worked, even part time in high school. Tell him he needs to pay his own car bills; gas and insurance. Even if you have the means to pay these things for him, you are not doing him any favors. He needs to grow up and be responsible for himself. Good luck!

Nothing like lack of money to make them want to work. Do not give him a penny in fact tell him he has to pay you if he wants to continue living with you !

I have a 20-year-old who is also unemployed at this time, but in his case, it's the job market. He has applied and applied; he's interviewed. Just nobody is hiring. And it's not like he's looking for a big money making job. He'd take just about any job at this point. He really wants to be making some money. It does look like he may have finally found something through our church though. We're keeping our fingers crossed. It won't be a lot of money, but it will be a start.

Keep the purse strings tight. That usually does the trick.

Yeah, I would say that is the main reason here to - the job market sucks for someone that has no real education past high school... he has applied and did some follow up calls but no one is hiring... and now I think he is getting discourage to the point that he doesn't search as often as he use to.

I want to keep on encouraging him with out him thinking (or feeling) like he has failed. HEck I have even filled out an application or two for him online when I was up late one night and could not sleep.

heh, where your son is at is kind of like where me and my brother are all, except we are a bit closer to rock bottom. The job market is horrible where I live so it's been months since I graduated and still nothing. My brother who had dropped out and got his GED recently went back to high school (you can go until you are 21) because he thinks having his diploma will help him more. In order to get a sense of purpose back in my life I'm applying for financial aide so I can go to college. (more a music degree! woo! ) who knows, maybe by the end of those 2 years I'll be good enough at piano to be in a band or something because there are always gigs (and my step-dad has taught me quite a bit about the music industry since he has been in it for over 30 years).

It's discouraging and frustrating when I read topics like this and people assume the kid is spoiled/lazy/gets money.

Its a sad fact of the times that a majority of teens are like this if you are not good on you, unfortunatly you are in the minority.

He is officially enrolled as of today... and I got an apt with him next Tuesday to go over the financial part of his education. He transfered his degree from the original Computer Animation (for video games) over to Computer Graphic & Design.

w00t -
Thanks for this!

My son and I are up at the college getting all the final touched done for him to start school "hopefully" in March - if not then by April.
I am siting in the college library using the computer while my son is taking a test.

Just an update on my son too. He finally found a job!! Yeah!! It has been a long process, but he's working again. He kept hanging in there and it finally paid off. Encourage, encourage, encourage.
