Hi Rachie,
I'm a Mom with 2 girls & and 11. When my youngest was a baby she suffered from constipation. One time I had to actually pull a hard piece out for her. The doctor recommended pear nectur in her bottle and glycerine suppositories. Since your son is 2 and a half then you could make sure he eating good amounts of fruit and vegetables. Bananas can also be constipating. Avoid apple juice as it can be constipating. For the rash I'm assuming he's still in diapers right. Keep him as dry and clean as possible. Also your doctor can prescribe a medicated cream. My youngest had a bad rash once where she actually had little raw spots. You can even let him sleep without anything on his bottom at night (just protect the mattress) and that will let the air get to it. I've heard of children who hold their bowel movements. It's most common during toilet training.

Hope the doctor can help... and remember to avoid to much cheese - kids love it but it can really clog them up.

My eldest went through that cycle of diarrehea and constipation, it turned out to be allergies. If the rash came on suddenly and was instantly bad, it could be a yeast rash and can be extremely painful and needs Rx ointment.

The body needs water to rid itself of waste, so make sure he's drinking enough water to make things easier.

I agree with AAAAA. My daughter had constipation/diarrhea and it was from allergies and leaky gut syndrome. What really helped her at that time was giving her probiotics which heal the gut. Within 2 months she was much better. Then we moved on to fix the rest of it with an alternative doc.

My middle son had this same problem starting around 9 months of age. For him, it turned out to be food allergies. He is sensitive to dairy and gluten, and once we removed those from his diet, the poop issues resolved themselves. We also used probiotics, like sannah, to help get his gut healthy again...

In the meantime, while we were figuring all of this out, we saw a pediatric GI specialist, who put him on miralax. It was really necessary for a while, because he had a big fear of pooping and would hold it and it would make the situation worse. The miralax broke the cycle, and then taking him off of dairy and gluten really resolved it once and for all.

hope your little one feels better soon!

Success!! I got him a poop. I turned it into a game. I thought if i can make him crouch down in the squatting position he mite poop and he did! He loves it when i count to 3 and do something he just has to do it too. So id go 1 2 3 and crouch down i even made pushing noises and ihe done the same, i think it pretty much fell out of him lol. And ive had 2 more poos since then. But if it happens again im definately going to look into what you have said, hopefully its nothing too serious if it does happen again. Thank you all so very much for your help and advice its very much appreciated =)
Thanks for this!

glad your son has started feeling more comfortable having a poo, just a wonder if hes still in nappys why not get him to sit on a potty, help him relax by chatting to him making it fun, my son started fine but after about 2yrs of age he started messing and they couldnt say why he just didnt realise, so in the end i had him take a book to bathroom and read book, comic, while sat on toilet he would get 30mins, now being 17 its hard to get him to keep to routine but i notice every now and again he will disapear in bathroom with his ds and be in there a while, hope things are improving for you and your son

Hi, Rachie. Your son is just the right age to introduce fiber into his meals. This will really help him to stay regular. Lots of young children do not like vegetables--they like fruit. Maybe that's because fruit is sweet. Well, in any case try to get your baby to eat carrots, peas, brocolli, spinach -- all the good stuff. He may not like it, but make a game out of eating vegetables like you did when he had a solid bm.
