I'm 26, and my mom's insurance was gracious enough to extend my coverage to the end of the calender year instead of kicking me off on my birthday. When I was an out of state student they covered my care (at a different rate than home, but still reasonable), but I am no longer a student and am likely moving across the country in a month for a job opportunity. This job will not offer health benefits. I'm just wondering if they're still required to cover me, or if I'm going to be without health coverage for 5 months, until when I can enroll in Obamacare.

If they say you are covered until the end of the year, I would think you are covered to the end of the year. I would communicate with them though, I think there is a provision for you getting your own plan from them, a "continuation" since you are no longer in school, etc.; I believe the change in circumstances makes your situation different so you can get insurance "now" rather than having to wait until the next open period/year. Don't know though, ask the insurance company.

If it is in another region of the country, likely no coverage. If it is a neighboring state, better possibility of some coverage. You more likely will need to get new insurance in the state where you will be living. You won't have to wait until the Enrollment Period. I've been through this in this year. Most medical coverage insurance is issued in the state we live. Exception of course, being a dependent student attending school out of state. Do as much ahead of time as you can, before you relocate. *** Be sure you have enough meds, e.g. 90 days to be sure you do not run out while you are getting established with new coverage, new doctors, new pharmacy, etc. ***. Good luck. Good thinking ahead. |
