Things Cis People Say

I was inspired by TheSeamster to make a list of things cis people say in regards to trans/NB/queer people. I think this can almost work as a reference for people who are trying to find out if someone is transphobic, transmisogynist, and generally ignorant.

I'll go first,

"I mean, your 'biological' sex is important to your identity. You can't ignore science."

A cis boy said this to me while we studied biology in college.

"Allies are part of the acronym!"

Says someone who doesn't realize the redundancy of saying you're a LGBTQA Ally.

"God doesn't make mistakes."

So, wouldn't that mean me being trans isn't a mistake, either?

"It is a mental illness and can be cured."

"I think you're just trying to find a way to stand out."

Honestly, I think a lot of all of this is a massive "fashion/ I'm cool look at me"
statement.

What the hell is wrong w/ you people?! If you have an innie your a girl; and outie your a boy. Still confused? Take a picture send it to me and I will tell you what gender you are.

What is your real name, then? How do you have sex? Did you have surgery?

The English language can't handle so many new pronouns!

As though the language is a physical thing rather than an ever changing and expanding idea.

OH... I just thought of one! "So, do you have a female name?" That's what people on the internet ask me when I tell them I'm trans... I guess I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing...

that name doesn't sound female/male/neutral...

After you spent 10 minutes clearly describing the concept of gender identity and clearly pointed out it is not a sexual preference they say...

"Oh, so you're gay!"

I mean why else would you want to change your gender?
Trans women/men are just lesbians/gays who can't deal with their sexuality.
What does Genderqueer even mean? Gay?

"You couldn't even keep a marriage." (I was in a life partnership that ended, they think I was married).

These were said to me at a family function last night by over-religious extended family. My mom and dad have respected my gender or lack thereof since I was a child. These people are toxic.

The second to last one got to me the most because, I am a scientist. I am a writer with a published novel. I worked god damn hard for those "titles", why do my looks erase EVERYTHING I have worked for? I am so discouraged and angry.

You can't fight nature!
But you're a boy/girl, you can't just change that

Like some how your body determines who you are on a genetic level and that your disposition and emotions are genetically pre-determined and can never change.

"If you prayed this would go away"
"I believe this is because of a spirit of perversion"
"It's disgusting"
"Why would you do that to your body?"
"If you transition it'd be the hardest thing I'd ever have to go through" Well, what about what I have to go through!?

Funny thing about that (what we have to go through.) Somehow that doesn't enter into the equation. I suppose that's because it's really just a choice... you know... voluntary...

"What's the difference between men and women? xx and xy."
"How do you expect me to take you seriously if you use those words to describe yourself?"
"There's no such thing as non-binary, you have to be man or woman"
"THE DSM" (as if they're not using outdated criteria and the DSM isn't perfect, but stands with us now)
"but you're such a pretty girl/handsome man!"
"I just don't see why I need to correct myself on your pronouns/name.... I'm technically right biologically speaking."

"What difference does it make? You're a human being..."
