As a non-binary person who is biologically female or afab, however you wish to call it ,and identifies as a heterosexual woman but who also feels more masculine than feminine in most other areas, one thing that always annoys me is when cis people(my mom for ex does it a lot) tell me things like :
"why don't you just let your hair grow a bit, style it a tad more feminine, maybe wear some jewellery or a piece of clothing that would make you look more feminine? Everyone makes compromises, why would it be so hard to just temper that masculine side so men would maybe like you, as you so desire?" Very painful to hear although I know they mean well and sincerely can't understand the problem. It makes me feel like what they actually mean, without intending it that way, is that in order to be attractive/liked/accepted/loved, I need to hide a huge part of my identity and put myself through a mental ordeal because my identity, the very way that I am is making me undesirable for no reason. |

I'm not sure if I said this one in my original post (my memory is horrible these days) but... this one grinds my gears the most:
You can almost pass for a boy Maybe that's because I am one. This one is almost a nice compliment, but backhanded: You'd be a very handsome boy

I only refer to people by their birth/assigned names unless you legally change it.
Said to me by my sister who never uses my pronouns and refuses to call me by my name.

Next time she does that, ask her about Stefani Germanotta's latest album (Lady Gaga), or how Malcolm Little (Malcolm X) effected political change, or (and this might be hard to learn to pronounce, but worth it) the lasting effects of Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili's (Stalin's) policies on Russia up to today.

I was smiling when I read it. Gave me my reply for next time someone says it to me. And I hear it a lot, as well.

It goes for so many things. I'm pro diversity on many levels, and being tolerant, yet someone who is not tolerant is always whining I'm a hypocrite because I'm not tolerant to their opinions. They act like they really found some kind of really cool proof against me.
But why would I have to be tolerant to intolerance???

Hope this one hasn't been said yet... "If you were born a girl then God meant for you to be a girl." Really? I'd like the verse for that one please.

I love how these people just know what God intended and, in saying stuff like this, are essentially talking down to anyone who doesn't "get it". Such wise sages, they are.

We talk about making forms more gender inclusive.
CIS person 1: Oh, but we don't need to do this, it concerns only such a small portion of the population. CIS person 2: The solution is to just put "don't know" as an additional option, that fits everyone. Yeah, because just because YOU don't know that there are genders that don't fall into the binary, obviously we also cannot know who we are. Last edited by kraken1851; Aug 08, 2014 at 06:30 AM. |
