I wonder if reading about ethics would be of interest to you. It's all very logical and rational. And there is a lot of both logic and critical thinking involved. |

I'm interested. Can you give an example?

That's the problem with being straight to the point, instead of working around and "tricking" the person a lot of times, their natural reaction is conflict

You should of added "as well as some posters here" after therapists. Would of made the title so much more spot on!!!!

So, Atypical Disaster. Are there truly no resources, or do you just refuse to consider the resources that exist?
You do accept your (new) diagnosis, right? or do you ever wonder if they screwed it up, along with everything else? Don't get me wrong... I am also suspicious of therapists. They have their own baggage and agendas. |

Yes, I accept my diagnosis. I don't wonder if they screwed it up because it fits me. It's that simple. |

Is there any benefit to being diagnosed?

I don't think about the diagnosis all that much. I like having discussions about it sure, but I don't stay up at night thinking about it. It is what it is, and I'm fine with that.
On a side note though, ASPD is really not something you want to have on your records. |

I don't know that having a diagnosis of NPD is all that helpful, either. Some therapists have written about how they have helped sufferers... but, there isn't much.
I can see how ASPD would be seen as something to be wary of, when it's written down on a record somewhere... I wonder if NPD is the same way? I think my T did inform my insurance company. and my wife has used it as a reason to harass me. Although it's usually good-naturedly. For some reason, some see the lack of empathy and the tendency to cause problems as a bad thing... lol. Go figure. |

and having the personality I do (INTJ), I'm also aware that every diagnosis IS subjective.
It's not like it's a blood test.... it's a subjective diagnosis given by a person who may or may not know what the hell they're talking about. Some in the MH field are definitely more experienced and objective than others. |

I think that NPD and ASPD in particular are seen as "disorders" not only because of the issues the people with either one of those conditions have, but because of the destruction they can and do cause to other people. Underground said it a couple of times on here(he actually said it early on in this thread): "Narcissistic Personality Disorder One of the few conditions where the patient is left alone and everyone else is treated." The same applies to ASPD. I mean really, you type in the words "sociopath" or "psychopath" into a google search and you'll find a plethora of blogs and such warning the public about how horrible people with ASPD are. Ditto with typing "narcissist" into a google search. There's only support out there for people who have been victims of people with ASPD or NPD. There's hardly any support forums that allows Antisocials and Narcissists to post openly and not have to hide who they are. It's why I stick around on here. Same applies to the mental health system at large with few exceptions. They will happily treat people who have been victimized by Antisocials or Narcissists... but if you are a Narcissist or Antisocial, they just kind of stare at you and don't know how to work with you. That's been my personal experience anyway, no therapist has ever known what to do with me. Ever. |

It took me awhile to find a MH professional that could be objective with me, but it was worth it to me. ![]() |

But, he also showed some compassion and understanding about just what it is that led to me having a NPD. If he hadn't got caught up in that damn Narconon, I'd probably still be seeing him. |

Some therapists do have compassion towards Narcissists and genuinely want to help them... but with Antisocials? Blah, in my experience they just think I'm evil like most people do when my mask slips off. Oh well. |

Believe it or not, I have some experience with being labeled as "evil".
I think it's the lack of empathy. But, I also think labeling me as evil is gross exaggeration. No T has ever done so. I did piss a few off. Maybe they thought it... lol. |

If your lack of empathy becomes evident to someone, they get really scared. They fear what they don't understand, hence words like "evil" being thrown around. |

I think it's more basic than that...
I think it's more like "you are not acting the way I want you to act... I know I can't change you... so, I'm going to label you as evil... how do you like that?" At least that has been my experience, the very few times it has happened to me. The people doing the labeling were no princes themselves... I can tell you that. |

What I find hilarious is that people call me "evil" and expect me to feel insulted. HAHAHA.

it's more of a helpless feeling for me.
I'm not going to change...at least not in the face of their threats... I dont' respond to threats .but, it saddens me that people can be so ill-informed... and retarded. |
