All this week, I've been trying to keep my hands away from my head (I'm an ex hair-puller, although I don't know if "ex" is really correct any more) for a single day, and I just can't do it. Ok, so I'm not back to deliberately pulling out hairs - closest I've got is snapping off split ends - but sometimes they come out accidentally, and it makes me realise how much I miss it.

I thought this was supposed to get easier as time went on, not harder! Or am I just not trying hard enough any more?

Hi Rio, do you have some intense feelings that you don't know how to handle?

I kinda with you in this too, except I have dermatillomania, rather than trich.

I know how hard it is to stop though. Focus on single hours, rather than days.. for me, if I'm going to attempt to stop, that's the only way I can get anywhere at all.

You should probably cut off the split ends, otherwise you will probably end up pulling your hair out again.

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((Rio)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) I can be hard if things are overwhelming to use new coping skills rather than the ones that we relied on for so long. Please be kind to yourself and try to think of how you have been coping throughout this last year. I know how hard it can be.

((((WMD)))) Thanks. Uni work may have something to do with it - studying is that perfect combination of boredom and stress. I was still finding it difficult during the summer holidays, though, and even something like reading a book or going on the computer will make me want to start up again.

Yeah, a whole tub might be a bit too much! I do like the idea of rewards, though, I'll give that a go.

((((Kiya)))) Thanks. Other than feeling slightly overwhelmed at the amount of work we have to do this semester (three more courses than last year, and our exams are a month earlier than they would normally be because they've been moved to before Christmas ), I think I'm doing ok.

Thanks, iamtwilight. Yep, it's trichotillomania - sorry you have it too, it sucks. The only way I've found of stopping that really works for me is keeping my hair covered, but unfortunately that's not a practical solution unless it's winter when I can wear a hat. Sometimes holding something in my left hand (I'm right handed, so my left hand is normally left free) will work, though - have you got a stress ball, or something to keep your hands occupied? I've heard that wearing gloves can help as well.

Thanks for replying, Sannah. Not that I'm aware of - I know that stress is supposed to make it worse, and I know that my hand will often go to my head if (for example) I'm being asked a difficult question or I'm struggling with coursework, but like I told I_WMD it can still be very hard to resist even when I'm relaxed, like when I'm reading, watching TV or at the computer. I think the computer is worst, for some reason, unless I'm typing.

(((((reddevil))))) Thanks. Sorry you're finding it hard to stop as well. Going an hour at a time instead of a day might be an idea...I made it to the evening last night (hadn't realised that being on the phone would set me off, I'll need to watch for that ), which I guess is something. And you're right about the split ends - I'm kinda overdue for a haircut anyway.

(((((bipolar_bear))))) Thanks. That's true - I don't understand why I was finding it difficult over the summer as well, though, I shouldn't have been feeling stressed then. Thanks - my flatmate was out for most of yesterday so I could wear a hat when I was studying, which helped. Can't do that today, though...I don't want to have to explain to her, I doubt she'd understand.

oohh! what i do is keep my hair in a bun, but i look a fool (in my opinion) whilst doing so.... so that doesn't work out very often. ahh. wearing gloves? well, we can try that out soon since its getting colder!

thanks for the advice - ,

No problem! Shame that keeping it in a bun doesn't work, hope you have more luck with gloves. I'm tempted to start wearing gloves already, it's getting cold here!
