Ok, I should put this in Health, but more people read this forum. My left top eyelid is swolen at the corner opposite the tear duct. Open or closed it doesn't hurt, but it does when I blink. It's not like killer pain... just annoying. Any ideas? I'm wondering if I have a sty (sp?) forming. If it's not better by tomorrow, I'm going to the doc.

Take it from the chick that works for an eye doctor...you're getting a stye.

Warm washcloth over your eye the rest of the night, and you should be good as new!

Huge Hugz and Much Love,
Jenn

wow Dolfin... I didn't know they could NOT hurt! I had a friend growing up that always got them, but they always were painful for her... and it wasn't something I did any research on, ya know?

That's what they're called? I had one a while back then, and warm washcloth my mum said too. What causes them?

Have it checked out, ASAP, eyes are something that can't be put on "hold". Another thing, so often eye conditions may not give us pain, so we tend to not think anything is wrong, but have it checked, okay??
Just a "mom's" suggestion.
Take care, sweet kid, and let us know how you do, okay?

Fondly,
DE

Put a very warm damp washcloth on it and keep it there as much as possible. That should take care of it.

Mort,

Here's the definition of a stye and courses of treatment from the website my Doc and I use, www.visionweb.com , to show patients instances of eye conditions that they may be afflicted with. Hope the info helps!

Definition:
A stye, medically known as a hordeolum, is a small lump that appears on, inside or under the eyelid or on eyelashes. Styes typically result from a staphylococcal bacteria infection or from a clogging of the oil glands around the eyelashes or inside the eyelid, but can be triggered during times of stress. They are usually harmless, despite their appearance – causing redness, tenderness, pain and sometimes light-sensitivity and eye-watering.

Styes are often confused with chalazion, which are cysts that forms on or inside the eyelids as a result of a blockage of one or more of meibomian glands (glands that secrete sebum, an oily secretion responsible for tear-film production). However, a chalazion is not an infection and is usually painless, but may attract bacteria and lead to an infection. Styes that appear on the eyelid are usually deeper, more painful and last longer than those appearing on the eyelash.

Prevention & Treatment:
Wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your eyes to the spread of bacteria. Avoid sharing eye makeup, especially if you’re prone to recurring styes.

While an eyelash stye will usually drain on its own in approximately 2 days, a warm compress can speeding healing. Apply a washcloth on the affected eye for 10 minutes, four times per day, to release the fluids that have built up inside the stye. Do not squeeze the stye. Antibiotic ointment, or an antibiotic-steroid combination, can be used until symptoms have cleared.

If the eyelash stye lasts more than 3 days or the infection appears to be spreading, consult your eye doctor. You may have a chalazion or another condition that may require further examination.

Eyelid styes are more stubborn and usually require treatment by a physician. They may need to be lanced under sterile conditions. Oral antibiotics may be prescribed if the stye is very large, abscessed or not responding to other treatment.

Contact lenses should not be worn during infection or drainage of a stye. Your eyecare provider may recommend replacing your contact lenses after the stye has healed to prevent recurrence or spread of the infection.

Like I said, hope it helps out anyone who has eye troubles, not just styes. (Wow, already back in the fray and I don't go back to my patients until May 9th! I love it when I can help people! Eye problem )

Dolfin
