I've been having some, eh hem, womanly problems since October, but the cost of a physical and Pap has been out of the question. If there's anything seriously wrong I can't afford treatment anyway, so why find out what the problem really is, you know? But it's gotten to the point where I can't deal with it anymore.

Anyway, I called the county health department and I QUALIFY FOR THE WELL WOMAN PROGRAM!!! I thought I made too much money, but I don't. I don't know what I'll do if I need more tests or treatment, but I guess I'll worry about that when the time comes.

So, if anyone else out there has no insurance and thinks they can't get any assistance, call anyway. You might be surprised.

Oops, missed you Jen. You were posting while I was posting. ((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))

Yep, one should never assume. I could get a free mammogram too, but I don't think I have any family history of it and no symptoms.

I wanted to add that the income cut off for this area with a 3-person household and one income earner is $40,000, in case anyone was wondering.

Thank you.

It's about time I got some good news that no one can squash on me. I got some good news

This should qualify as enough of a physical that I can get my Celexa refilled for another year too. That will help me get through the emotional turmoil I'm dealing with right now too. My foundation isn't as shakable when the emotions are on an even keel. I'm just not sure if only the Pap smear is covered, or if the office visit fee is too. I'll find out tomorrow at 10:00 when I go get signed up.

Cool Pat. Thanks for the info. I thought she said the visit was free too, but my head has been so discombobulated lately, I'm having a hard time remembering things, even important stuff.

Yeah, the mammogram is only included if there's a history of breast cancer of if you have suspicious symptoms. My doctor recommended one two years ago just because I was over 40 and he wanted a baseline. That's one thing I don't like about my doc. He fails to take into consideration my lack of insurance and my less than bottomless bank account. The other is that he thinks single women of "my age" are never at risk for anything because he assumes we don't date guys young enough to be at risk themselves. I guess he thinks when I was brave enough to date that I was only dating guys old enough to be my much older brother or something. And when I did demand a hepatitis test before I got serious with one guy, because I have a tattoo and a couple of piercings, his comment was "is this guy THAT much of a risk."
I got some good news You'd think this doc was ancient, but he's barely in his 30s.

I'm signed up on the Wisconsin Well Woman Program. They're paying for my exam, a Pap, and a mammogram. Now, normally I wouldn't qualify for the mammo, but my doctor had suggested I get one two years ago because of my age. With my depression, the woman who got me signed up said it was a good idea for me to have a mammogram now since I have no problems. That way I'll get a clear bill of health and I won't have that to worry about and maybe increase my depression. Is that cool or what?

I'm also signed up for expanded services, so the doctor is prepared to discuss my depression. If I didn't sign up for expanded, she wouldn't be prepared for that time-wise. The expanded services are something they've just added. It includes depression, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, osteoporosis, and domestic abuse screening.

I called my primary doc when I got back and explained I have a physical scheduled, but not for another three weeks, and I really need to get back on Celexa now. Could he supply me with a one-month, non-refillable generic prescription? No problem, but I can't get it till tomorrow.

The veteran's benefits office is located just down the hall from the health department. I started to walk down, there, stopped, said I'd just call, and then said "No, go NOW. It's 20 feet away and it will save time to do it in person." Soooo, they gave me the number to call for home loans to find out how to get my name off the title and get my home loan certificate back. My ex keeps dicking around and refusing to refinance for one reason or another so my name stays on the title. If he defaults on the loan, they can come after me. I didn't think I qualified for medical help because I didn't serve in war time and/or wasn't disabled during my service, and the enrollment cut off for non-disabled, non-war time vets was like two years ago. But, I DO still qualify because of my income and family size. There's a VA hospital 25 miles away where I could get service. I don't qualify for the GI Bill for education, but I do qualify for 100% tuition reimbursement. I'll be able to learn a new skill for when I'm too burned out to do what I'm doing presently.

I'm relieved and excited all at the same time for a change. Things seem a lot brighter for once.

YAY for you! When things seem like they can't get much worse, luckily, they start getting better (lease they did for us).

I'm so glad things worked out for you! You deserve it!
