Hello all,
I have a situation that I've noticed constantly gives me stress. I would really appreciate it if you could provide me with 1. advice on how to tackle the situation and 2. advice on how to control my emotions/anxiety when dealing with the situation. So, I normally feel super anxious when someone says they'll do XYZ by some time on some date and when I don't see they've done it I call back and its like a runaround. This is the situation I'm at now. I just finished a short course at a studio and they promised to give me a student reel. I had 2 classes for which they had to do this. The studio guy made 1 reel for 1 class but didn't make the other and told me he didn't have time and he'll make it when he gets back into the city ( he went out of town). By then I left the country and I said fine, do that and mail it to me. Now its been a month and he's been giving me the runaround, I just called him last week and he said he'll get it done by midweek this week and there are no signs of it. What do you suggest I should do? I feel helpless, I really want this reel but I also feel so much anxiety every time I sit down in silence mymind goes there... and I feel like there's no more point in asking him for it over and over again... Please help. thanks |

Does he have a supervisor of any sort you could contact? How about sharing some of what you're feeling with him and how important it is to you, work on a legitimate guilt trip? When I feel helpless, I try to use my anger to get out of the helpless feeling (for myself!); I'd call him daily or a couple times a day, etc. and bug him so he will get it done to get you off his back.

As far as contacting him is concerned, he's got the whole receptionist crew telling me "Oh, he's not in today or tomorrow and I don't know when he'll be back". So i asked "ok then let me be transferred to the film room, I'll speak with the other guy". and they said "none of them are here". This is a lie because they can't run the class without the camera guy ( the guy I'm looking for) and there are to be 2 classes held today and tomorow, all day long, so there is SOMEONE in the room they just wont transfer me ![]() Could you provide more feedback based on new info? Thanks thanks thanks!!! |

Go in person. Sit down in the office and explain that you are not leaving until you speak with this guy. Do you have a written contract that says they will provide you with two reels? If so, you can threaten small claims court for their breach of contract. If all this sounds too stressful, turn it over to a friend with a letter giving them power of attorney for this particular problem. ANYONE can be an attorney, and it's amazing how hearing "my attorney will be calling you" can make some businesses suddenly get their act together!
Also - get everything in writing! Write down when you call them, what they said... when you visit, how long you had to wait... EVERYTHING! Hang in there! They do not have the right to treat you like this!

I would feel angry too if I were promised something and was given the run around. I agree with the other poster - use your righteous anger to supply you with the motivation and energy to come up with a creative approach to solving this problem.
First, I would get the name of the director (or whatever title) of your school. Problems that need to be resolved will (usually) only be resolved when addressed with someone in a position of power. As you have made clear, none of the underlings have made any effort to fulfill your request. Address your letter to the mucky-muck of the school you attended and outline all of the attempts you have made to get what was promised. Describe in detail what you are asking for and that you look forward to his/her help. Make sure that you supply your address and contact number and ask that this person call you and let you know what progress he/she has made in obtaining the object of your desire and when you can expect to receive it. Be polite, direct, yet firm. I say "squeaky wheel gets the grease". So go forward and squeak! This is all about being assertive and doing all you can do to "right a wrong". And do remember that being assertive does not mean that we will always get what we want. Sometimes, we need to cut our losses and move on. It's all about knowing when to let go and move forward. All the best, Laurie |

Hi, thanks cindy. That's the issue, I'm no longer in US and I don't have any friends in the city where I went to this studio. They don't have anything in writing where it says students get reels, but I was told clearly in class that we do and I also have his correspondence saying that he'd finish the rest in a week. I don't know how to get the email or contact for the President. They won't give me that either, can anyone suggest how I can go about getting that? I tried researching online but didn't find anything. |

Distressed, it seems to me that the situation is as such from what you have said. This is not a school (sounds like) but a studio which gives classes as well as turns out work from the majority of it's income, so there is probably no president or registrar that you can turn to. You are out of the country right now, so you are no longer their top priority.
Indeed, they are giving you the run around, and small claims might be the only way that you might be able to get your promised recording. I am really sorry that this is happening to you, and really, I don't think that any of this is your mistake. It's the mistake of the guy who didn't make the right number of tapes and then put off getting you yours in the time that he promised he would. Before you do or say anything else to these folks, you might want to get some legal advice. Good luck, and just remember, You are not at fault. Sometimes this just happens because work piles up and balls get dropped and people act unprofessional. Just don't let yourself get walked all over. HUGGGs |
