Sometimes when I'm bored or tired I just go to bed and sleep.

I did this today at around 5pm. It wasn't that I didn't get enough sleep (I had slept until 1:30pm), I was just bored (even though I should have been starting to study).

I ended up sleeping until 8pm. When I woke up I was really disoriented about what time it was. I didn't know what day it was and whether it was morning or night. It was kind of scary. Is this normal? This has happened several times before.

I do this all the time! I don't know how "normal" it is but it's probably common for a lot of people, especially if they suffer from depression.

Not limited to people who suffer from depression.
It's happens periodically to me.I know for myself alot has to do with medication I take.

And yes there have been times after taking an afternoon nap where I awake to think I slept the night away and realize that it's early evening. Then I have to wonder if I'll be able to be tired enough to sleep the night through(never seems to impede my good night sleep regardless).

I was even the same way when I was off meds, sleeping to pass the time.

I've had that happen before, too. In fact, I woke up one evening and asked my hubby why he wasn't getting ready to go to work. I was really confused.

I find that when I am sleeping a lot during the day or early evening, I'm usually trying to avoid something. Like schoolwork or housework or something.

I think this a common thing that occurs one time or another to just about all of us. It is not always due to depression, anemia, medication, boredom or any other condition, though they too can cause this.
Sometimes, we just are tired, and if we happen to take a nap and awake, feeling it was the am or pm, (disoriented)that's normal too. Sleeping at odd hours and disorientation
Students and non students, having a busy day can make us just plain tired.
The best kind of "tired" I like but haven't had for awhile (less active Sleeping at odd hours and disorientation ) is when I've worked physically hard outdoors in the fall, or when I have taken some nice brisk walks. I do find with exercise the tiredness hits somewhat delayed, due to that short spurt of energy that comes right after exercise.
If it does seem to be bothersome or starts to upset your daily functioning/lifestyle, then it may be something of concern, and should be taken up with your doc, may be time for a check up.
Gee, talking about this is making me feel a need for nap Sleeping at odd hours and disorientation
Well, I didn't sleep well last nite, maybe 2-3 hours, had to get up early, so yeah, I guess a nap may help at the present.
Take care y'all,
DE

Hi Green,

I do it, too. The confusion happens when you go to sleep in the daylight and wake up to dusk or night. You have no reference for time that way.

Don't worry!

I went through the disorientation when I had my recent bout of insomnia. 7am looks like 7pm. You don't know if you slept until early evening, through to the next morning, or clear to the next evening. I've had all three happen...

Thanks everyone for the explainations. The waking up to darkness thing really makes sense to me!

Now, the only problem is to try to find a way to stop being so darn tired!

I have studying to do but I keep deciding to just go to bed. I'm not even sleepy. I need more energy or something. Now I have a bit of a headache, I think it is from sleeping too much.

I just hope tomorrow won't be like it was yesterday or today.
