At this moment I really don't know how much more I can take.
I am a 21 year old male, and for the past few years I have strugled with extreme depression, suicide, and a general apathy towards life. Four yaers ago I thought I had hit rock bottom. I was on the brink of killing myself. When my parents found out, instead of getting me help they told me to pray and that would cure my condition. It did not: and there were even several instances where my father would scream at me that I was a sinner and needed I to repent. Being the good Christian kid that I was I tried to do just that. Now as a young adult I am still suffering with depression, and it is hurting my grades in college, as well as my relationships. Curently I am still trapped living with my parents, due to a lack of employment (we live in a very economicly depressed part of South Texas). How can get the help I need |

Does your college have a health center? Counselling?
Does your community have a crisis hot line that would also give you referrals?

I am so sorry that your parents have treated you in such a manner. Depression does not just go away by praying, trust me.
I'm sure that your college offers some sort of counselling services available. Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.

Xavier, welcome to the forums. I'm glad you found us here. I agree with the first two posts. You should be able to get some counselling services through your college. And if not, the only other thing I would know to do it try your hardest to get a part time job or something and get out of your parents house. I mean if they are having such a negative impact on you then you need to find a way to get away from that. I know you said that you live in an economically depressed area, but there must be SOMETHING you can do. I know how it is being depressed though. Sometimes you don't really want to do anything at all...let alone work. But you have to do something to help yourself at this point. I'm so sorry that your parents have treated you this way. I was raised by a very strict Christian father, and his answer to everything is to pray and it will get better. Then one day I realized that prayer alone wasn't helping me. I had to get some help from a professional. My parents still look down on me for that, but I am getting better. I can relate to your situation in so many different ways. I hope you can find a way to get help very soon. I'll be thinking of you. Good Luck.

Ah! You're not alone in being told to "pray about it." Don't get me wrong, I believe in prayer, but the age of miracles is past. Your depression may well be caused by an imbalance of chemicals in your brain, not because you "have sinned."
Definetely seek out counseling and see your family doctor and he can help get you started on your road to recovery. Like someone else told you, "Welcome home!" ![]()

I would like to thank all of you for your comments - it is really good to hear from people who don't condemn me for my struggles.
I have attempted to contact my Student Advisor about this issue, and hopefully they will be able to help me. |
